Coast Guard Summer AIM

hey,
Im going to be applying pretty soon. Has anybody here gone or is planning on going? what kind of stats does it take to get admitted? what are the admissions statistics? how many slots and how many applicants? thanks

I went to AIM, July 2004, it was a great experience, it's when I decided I really wanted to attend the CGA. If I remember correctly last year only 500 students were selcted (half of the applicants). The application also requires an essay, recommendations (choose a teacher from your strongest class), an interview if you'd like, I did, with an Auxiliary Representative. Check out the CGA website for more info.
Good luck.

are the admissions standards as high as the ones to actually getting into the academy?

I think they are probably less, not everyone has their best SAT scores yet, and one tip I have. If you really wanna go, let them know it!

Your freshman, sophomore and preferably 1st quarter Junior year transcript is required and standardized test scores, a teachers recommendation also. April 15 is the deadline.
You let them know you really want to go through your essay; "Why you want to want to attend the AIM program." If you get a chance visit the USCGA website.

i just finished writing my personal statement. its 750 words, 5 paragraphs. what a task :)

Deffinitely do AIM, if you do well then your chances of admission skyrocket.

Somewhere on the CGA website, It said 35% of those admitted for class of 2008 were from AIM. Good Luck.

My dd is working on her application for AIM here. She was accepted into the AFA summer session, but CGA is really her first choice. Just gathering those last few bits of paperwork... Hey Coastie--what time were you done that last day of AIM? Dd has to catch a plane out of CT to Detroit for an overseas trip the next day...

heartcross, if I remember correctly it was around 10 AM, but to be on the safe side contact admissions, just in case they change something this year. Congrats to dd on AFA summer session.

Thanks--the whole summer is shaping up that way--dashing from one thing to the next!

Who or what the hell is dd? I am thouroughly confused. Somebody please explain.

Dd is computer speak for dear daughter. btw--thank you for the warning about over-involvement in the application process. My involvement extends as far as asking what she needs to do next and asking how it's going. She is doing these on her own--well, I DID ask her if she remembered to get a copy of her transcript. ;-) (she had)

So Seal, are you a cadet, applying, or ???

I am an applicant who has received an appointment to CGA

My real aspiration is Naval Special Warfare though, hence the SEAL name.

Congratulations on that appointment. You must be quite excited! Come back next fall and tell how you are doing.

well, my application has arrived at the local rep and im assuming also at the academy. what is the purpose of sending one to a local admissions rep and one to the academy?

when i get my SAT results back (april 13th ish?) should i send them in to either the rep or admissions office?

in april theres a presentation thing or something at the coast guard auxillery station on treasure island, im planning on going to it, is anybody else?

The reason we were told for the one set of stats to the rep and one set to the academy, is that the auxiliary gets to pick some of the students for AIM themselves. My dd is driving over to Denver tomorrow for an Academy Day with all the academies and MOC's reps. She's meeting with her auxiliary officer too. I'll ask her to ask your SAT question, as she's in the same boat.

If you don't get into AIM, don't feel to bad and don't give up. I didn't get into AIM, but I received a full appointment to the CGA. Only 25% of each incoming class typically attended AIM.
