Coast Guard Summer AIM

Wow! That looks exciting! A bit far from CO to attend, though. ;-) Dd just got an email from CGA saying that they would notify about AIM on 16 May.

Does anyone know the stat's for AIM acceptance last year?

(My son is looking forward to the Yerba Buena CG event 4/16, too, Taffy. You'll spot him as being inordinately tall. He's not much of a chatter, though -- especially when there's military equipment to examine.)

all i have heard about stats was that they only accepted 500 out of 1000 applicants, and some people were denied who were later offered appointments to the CGA, so its definitely pretty tough

norcalmom, was your son blonde, shaved head, really really tall with a red jacket?

Yes, Taffy. My husband, who was w/ him, wonders if you had pigtails.
Did you love the day? If you and my S. are both lucky enough to find yourselves @ AIM, please don't blow my cover -- when he turned 17, I suddenly became "too enthusiastic about everything."

haha no im not that girl with the pig tails. im a boy. i was wearing a black jacket, dark blue shirt, light blue jeans, very white shoes, and i have brown hair, and no silly sunglasses. I was in his group, A.

here are the pictures i took today.

Jerry Townsend said that so far he has recieved about 20 applications, and expects 5 more in the next week... the thing is, last year he recieved 50. If this is the case all across america, the selection rate would be like 95%. in the past 1200 applications were started, 1000 recieved, 500 people accepted, and 470 acceptees attended. so you can see the benefit of having the applicant pool cut in half :)

What wonderful pictures--thank you for sharing those!

Fantastic pictures, Taffy (sorry about the gender confusion -- is there a story behind your screen name?).

Surprising info re: applications. I wonder why?

no real story behind my screen name, besides taffy tastes pretty good and sounds good too.

one reason there might be fewer applicants is the internet... people are seeing that the coast guard academy is ranked 6th for least happy students, theyre seeing how people drop out like crazy because its such a depressing place, etc.

Then why ...?

then why what? why would i want to go there?

I was really shocked when I heard the statistics too

usualyl about 290 cadets report to swab summer.... but an average graduating class is some where between 130-170 !

yeah, CGA grad rate is like 50%, AFA is like 80%, and theyre both military academies, so theres something in the water at the CGA. in my opinion the cga needs to do some updating as far as getting out of the 19th century. you dont need to make college hell in order to make good coast guard officers.

I wonder why the dropout rate is so high? Do you think it is because of the tough academic workload?

many reasons...

kids talk to their friends over break, who are partying, having fun, and living a normal college life, and want that. caught with alcohol twice and your expelled, what?

military isnt for everyone, neither is the coast guard

not only are they trying to handle the tough courseload, they have all the other activities and stuff to manage... so time management forces them to decide how to prioritize everything.

lack of sexual adventures

im probably the wrong person to ask, but im sure there are many other reasons.

During AIM 2004, my parents and I was told by staff and cadets that in the past many of the kids that were reporting didn't think the Coast Guard Academy would be so "military". It's my understanding there is a more concerted effort to inform applicants that the CGA is a military service academy like it's counterparts: USMA, USNA........

My mantra for June 27th: Be Fit! Be Determined! Perform!

I have to admit, as June gets closer I am getting a just a little nervous.

do we find out may 16th?

i just got accepted to the aim summer pgrm, and i'm looking forward to it, but i have some questions:

does any1 who has been there know about how many push-ups and sit-ups i should be able to do, and how fast i should i be able to run?

is there much swimming involved? (it only mentioned the 3 things above in the Eligibility section)

There is a suggested workout in your AIM packet to download.
