got a letter today =D

Congratulations yesforcollege.

Hey, I wasn't selected as a finalist for the Coca cola scholars competition and wondered what the stats are of the people selected. Here are mine:

SAT: 1600
ACT: 36
9 APs - all 5s
Selected as one of top 5 presenters at the Research Science Institute at MIT
2nd Place, International Science and Engineering Fair in 2004 and 2005
National May 2004 Teen of the Month
Top Florida Speaker, Junior Science and Humanities Symposium
American Academy of Neurology Neuroscience Research Prize
Over 500 hours volunteer work (school volunteer of the year)
Started own volunteer initiative
One of "Top 12 Emerging Leaders" under 40 years old in my county of over 500,000
Governer Jeb Bush High School All-Star (met him and Yolanda King, daughter of MLK Jr)
Debate, tennis, national chess top 100 players list, work experience as research intern, etc

holy crap ur like god, my stats were no where near that

whether or not you were, they probably thought you were lying...

How can they penalize me for what they think is not true? They can look up all the awards and especially the scores to confirm. Who comprised the selection committee and what exactly were they looking for?

Maybe more community service? I know you have 500+ volunteer hours and probably more than that, but u seem to be focusing more on ur achievements and personal awards than your service to others -- I feel like they valued community service more than grades. Just my opinion, I have no idea.

Holy Jeebus arpesh, where are you applying to school?!?!??!

Arpesh, I have similar stats and was selected in... sorry man you seem more than deserving of getting in but sometimes selections are random... i doubt that they would have thought your stats were false ... these are my stats copied from the harvard forum

SAT: 2400
SATII: 800, 800, 800, 790 (math, bio, phys, chem)
APs: 10 x 5's
IB diploma
I am a science/math guy: usamo, usapho, usabo, usaco semifinalists; davidson fellow, intel sts finalist, isef finalist, swc semis etc etc
But I did do some xtra stuff: all-state clarinet/principal in excellent youth symphony, state champ track team, lead clubs/comm service (600+ hrs)

Hey Sailbondy, i am applying to a bunch of combined BA/MD programs (this past week I have been in Boston, Philly and am going to Chicago for interviews with BU, Penn State and Northwestern HPME respectively.). However, I got in Harvard so that looks pretty attractive.

MattyB, it's possible. However, one of my essays was on this initiative i founded to enhance the cognitive skills and test scores of elementary school students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.

Impressive ffsoul. What's ur project on? I'm going to Indianapolis this yr too. STS is another comp where the judging was kinda weird, at least in the southeastern region. Another RSI friend from Florida and I both made swc regional finals, but weren't even selected as semifinalists for STS. I was pretty shocked cuz I have publications in Journal of Cell Transplantation, the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery, Biomaterials Forum and ChessLife and my recommender was 1st author on the cover story of Nature Medicine.

Ahh, I wish these competitions were less subjective.

contact me directly if you want information

man that is so neat, I get to see some of you guys in Atlanta! can't wait! submitted all my reg materials right away, even though that indemnity form was kinda freaky :)

Didn't get selected either. I'm assuming my grades hurt me. 92 with less than a 2000 on the new SAT. I was President of the student body a bunch of EC's for all four years of high school, founded my own non-profit business to help inner-city minorities and created and funded a golf program and raised over 50K for inner-city minorities as well. Can someone who got in post their stats? Its always interesting, and its kind of tough because you never will know for those who didn't get selected why you didn't, other than it was uber-competitive.

As far as I am concerned, being chosen as a semifinalist is awesome. You should all be proud of yourselves and your dedication. You have been identified as the top 3% of high school seniors who applied!
