My son was auto admit to UT but has not received a decision on his major yet. I have seem some postings that a number of people, including non auto admits, have been accepted to Cockrell. The official notice on the Be A Longhorn page says that everyone will be notified by March 1. I was wondering if there are waves of notices or if they just trickle in between now and March? He applied for Electrical Engineering (Computer Engineering focus). He also applied for Plan II so that took up his second choice on the application so he doesn't have a second choice listed that is also in Cockrell if that makes a difference.

I think the first wave on Friday was for exceptional applicants. Most of those admitted had very high test scores and strong ECs. These people were sort of “auto admitted” into their majors. The next wave I think will be about a month after Friday so around Jan 10th, and so on until March 1st.

Thanks. That makes sense. He is a strong applicant but not the super stats type that you see sometimes on CC. His stats are significantly better than other students from his high school who were admitted to Cockrell in the last few years so I am being optimistic.

@gobluemom85 Do you mind sharing his stats? My daughter has the auto admit and applied for Chem E and Plan 2 as well.

Class rank 2/120 (Catholic HS), GPA 4.0 u/w; 4.6 weighted, ACT 32 Comp. School doesn’t offer many APs but he’s taken all that could fit in his schedule (8 by the time he graduates). Decent ECs - band, section leader; NHS, National Spanish HS, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, some other clubs, about 100 service hours each year (mostly at church), one year soccer, two years cross country. Some awards, mostly for music. National Hispanic Recognition Scholar, National Merit Commended. From what I can tell, he is in a good position for UT Engineering but Plan II is probably a reach.

Thanks for sharing. He is in a good position! Good Luck!

haven’t gotten in yet so scared. chance me?

In-State (go to 47th ranked school in the nation)
weighted gpa: 4.44/5.0
rank: top 39% (had some family emergencies which are explained in my rec letters)
sat: 2090 (730 M, 720 R, 640 W)
sat subject: 790 math level 2
plenty of great ec’s including aerospace engineering internship working w/ prof. from ut austin

Your ranking is really going to hurt you. I wouldn’t get my hopes up. Cockrell is tough to get into.

what about natural sciences? for physics. that is my second major. but like i noted, i had some pretty bad family emergencies and a school transfer that actually affected my gpa. when i moved from cali they counted my unweighted 3.8/4.0 as a 3.8/5.0 when i got here. it is a bit frustrating, but my counselor has mentioned it in her rec letter.i have also gotten a rec letter for aerospace engineering from a ut professor.

Natural Sciences made some notifications on Friday, too. My son was accepted into the computer science major. In–state, auto-admit. He’s still waiting to hear about honors, though. We’re crossing our fingers!

@treehuggermom as i stated i am so nervous about this process. do you think i can get into at least nat sci. if not for engineering

can you please take a look at that?
oh update: i also won academic all-state and academic all-district for football

Don’t panic yet! Admissions are just starting. Your stats look good so try to relax. You never really know what they’re looking for so take a deep breath. Good luck!

Have a plan B. Cap? Another school?

I am telling my own child the same thing. He is applying to a variety of places, though he does have his druthers. There is more than one path to the future you want.

Same but I just want to go to UT because they have one of the top AE programs in the nation
