Hi, I am an incoming freshman to UT's EE program. My orientation and registration of classes is next week and I was wondering which teachers you guys would recommend me take or avoid. Thank you ahead of time.

302 and 306 are the two introductory classes required of all first year EEs.

For 302, I would def. take Cardwell. I don’t know much about the other professors. Cardwell is a bit dry at first, but one of the best professors in EE.

For 306, Ambler. Ambler is funny and the class is not too difficult comparatively to Patt’s. That said, many people drop out of EE after 306.

Do you know anything about Beck for 302 and Abraham for 306?

Abraham traditionally teaches graduate courses. He is one of the senior faculty and has a distinguished record of research and teaching. That said, I have absolutely no idea how good he is as an introductory level professor :).

I don’t know about Beck either.

How hard or bad are the EE 312 profs? BME majors have to take this, unfortunately. :(

what’s so bad about 306? 0_o

312 curriculum tends to be standardized across professors. This means that you all will have similar programming assignments and tests. I took Julien and think she’s an excellent professor. I’ve heard Krasner is okay, but he can be abrasive sometimes. The tests are standard from year to year. Try to find previous tests.

306 is the first taste of the type of thinking that will be required for the rest of the EE discipline. Introductory topics include assembly language, computer architecture, digital logic/arithmetic etc. While these topics are not inherently difficult, they do require a certain type of analytical thinking that is rarely cultivated in high school.
