CoE question

Hello,

I will be applying to the CoE next year but saw something puzzling on a UMich brochure. It says that its recommended to take a one year of a "pre-engineering subject" such as CAD, drafting, or computer-related technology. What classes are considered those? I have reg Comp Sci. as well as AP Comp Sci. but those are shown in their own recommended category.

Thanks!

You are fine. I never took a CAD or engineering class. Although I did take AP Computer Science. Take AP computer science. If you learn it well, you can take the Computer Science AB test and pass out of engineering 101. I highly recommend going into CoE with a good background in computer programming, because all majors need to take engr 101, which is C++ and Matlab.

As far as "pre-engineering" subjects go, there were CAD classes at my school, but from what i hear, it never went in depth. Try to load up on some AP science courses, they will help make ur life much easier in CoE. I recommend AP physics (B or C, but you only get credit for C) and AP Chemistry, if you havent taken them yet.

Thanks for the reply! I will be taking APCS next year but unfortunately we learn Java rather than C++; is there a huge difference between the two languages? I've already taken AP Physics C, did well in the class, but didn't do too well on the exams, 3 Mech & 3 E&M =( - should I even report these scores?

AP Physics is usually taken Senior year at my school but I got a little jumpy and took it because it's my favorite subject. Taking AP Bio next year; I'm not a big fan of chem.

Oh by the way, I'm really nervous about getting in. Would you mind sharing with me the GPA and SAT you got in with? (PM is fine) - If not, that's totally cool and I understand.

Thanks again!

When I took APCS I learn java as well, its a good class. there are not many differences in the basic level between Java and C++. They are both object oriented languages.

Your AP score will not have affect on your admissions, but you wont get any credit for them(Michigan requires a 5 for engineering school).

Its good that you enjoy physics, a lot of people ive talked to hated it, so you might be at an advantage when it comes time to take the class.

Sent you a pm

I sent you one as well!

Thanks very much to both of you!
