Anybody know how competitive the CoE merit scholarships are to get for the in-college applicants? I just finished freshman year with a 3.54 (3.8+ second semester) and am wondering if I have a chance at picking up one. I declared as CSE, so I don't know if that matters much or not. I was an Air Force ROTC cadet but dropped and lost my scholarship so I'm kind of needing the money.

Did you fill out the general engineering scholarship app this summer? (The deadline was June 1st). It’s a pretty simple application and definitely worth doing. The primary merit scholarships are either through the general CoE application or industry-sponsored. The CoE merit awards were $2,000 last year, and the industry scholarships are generally a little higher (the one I got was $3,000, but they probably vary). If you apply for both industry and general merit scholarships, they will give you whichever is higher, but you can’t get both.

I’m not really sure how competitive they are - the website says you only need a 3.0 for merit, so you might have a decent chance. But then again it also says they only have about 200 scholarships total for engineering, so assuming about 100 are for pure merit, that would mean only about the top ~2% would get one.

Yes, I filled out the General App scholarship. I’m hoping I at least get 3,000 dollars a year. That 2 percent would be true if every engineer applied, but it doesn’t sound like many do…

Yeah, I’m not sure what percentage actually apply. Good luck then…
