Coed Bathrooms?

Okay anyone who is a student or alumn of williams.
How likely is it I would have to use a coed bathroom?
How easy is it to avoid it?

thanks

As far as I know, there are no “men only” or “women only” bathrooms in any Williams dorm - they’re all coed, at least in theory. That said, most freshman entries are divided by gender housing-wise, so you’d be living on a hallway or floor with people of the same gender and your bathroom would be primarily used by those people, so it’d be single-sex for all practical purposes. After freshman year, upperclass housing is pretty much all mixed-gender, so in general you’ll probably have guys and girls sharing bathrooms.

It’s really not a big deal. Pretty much every other residential living situation in the world has coed bathrooms (it’s not like you have separate men’s and women’s restrooms in your house, is it?), so why should a dorm be different? The smaller bathrooms are mostly single-occupancy anyway, and the larger shared bathrooms have closed stalls for toilets, showers, etc. so it’s not like you’re ever walking around naked in a public space.

Oh really, grow up…The bathrooms at my home are coed, as I have son and a daughter. It doesn’t mean I don’t close the door.

I’m a current student at Williams - all dorm bathrooms, as far as I know, are co-ed. It’s never been a problem for anyone that I know of. It’s not like everyone in your hall is going to want to shower/use the bathroom at the same time… Additionally, there are usually numerous bathrooms on any given floor.

Essentially, you have no need to worry. It’s unavoidable, but it’s also not a problem.

It would be unrealistic to expect to always have single sex bathrooms at Williams. Many are functionally single sex: freshmen live on hallways with students of the same sex, or older students live in suites with friends of the same sex. For two years now, I have been the only woman in my pick group, and neither I nor my friends feel uncomfortable sharing the bathroom with a bunch of guys.

It’s hard and embarrassing to sit in a stall next to a member of the opposite sex, especially with all the sounds that pop forth. My insides kind of seize up.
