So I recently switched my major to cog sci, HCI concentration. I'm taking the CSE 7 class right now and I'm really enjoying all the programming, so I'm considering taking up a comp sci minor as well. The problem is that I'm already at the spring quarter of my second year, and so if I do pick up the minor, I'd have to take 20 units from here on out, until the spring of my fourth year.

I want to take the upper div CSE to fill my HCI upper divs, but in order to do that I need CSE 100, which basically requires all the lower div req's for a comp sci minor...

Since upper division minor courses cannot overlap with the major ones, I'd have to take an additional 3 courses for a minor..

Is it worth it to have a comp sci minor on top of HCI? Or is that a bit redundant...?

CSE 11 (or 8A/8B, I do recommend 11 though–not that much more difficult), CSE12, CSE 20, and CSE 21 aren’t that difficult. I’d say 12 and 21 are more difficult than 11 and 20 though. 20 and 21 also satisfy Math requirements for G.E.s and Cogsci major (but maybe you already satisfied the math requirements for those). I can’t say anything for the upper divs yet as I haven’t gotten that far yet.

I don’t think it’d be redundant. I’ve been told having a minor does nothing, because employers don’t really care (I’m not so sure this is true), but either way you’re building up more skills-- like you’ll be able to code in more languages. So, that’s always good.
It really depends on what you want to do later though with your major in Cogsci.
If you’re going into research or if you decide to enter the workforce without additional education, more programming skills is also an advantage in my opinion (also, if you plan on going the more computer-specific route or more like psychology/health/medicine).

There are some cogsci/hci ucsd groups on facebook that have members doing a cogsci-hci/cs minor (and others that have done it and graduated already). You might take a stab at talking with them, they’re friendly :)
