Cog Sci: Language and Cognition

Hi. I'll be transferring to Cornell as a junior next year. I've always had an interest in linguistics, but unfortunately my current school doesnt offer it. I would've liked to minor in linguistics, but I unfortunately just found out theat cornell doesn't offer that.

Would doing a minor in cog sci with a focus on language and cognition be similar to a linguistics minor or is it more based on psychology (yuck!!!)? Anything you can tell me about both the linguistics and cog sci programs would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

It depends on the type of linguistics that you’re looking at. If you’re interested in psycholinguistics, then Cog Sci is probably very similar. However, if you’re more interested in things like phonetics or historical, probably not.

My friend, Cornell has a linguistics major. [Major Requirements](http://linguistics.cornell.edu/undergraduate/major_requirements.cfm)

EDIT: Woops, you meant minor. My bad. In any case, you can take as many classes as you want in any discipline at Cornell, regardless of your major, and make an “informal minor.”

I’m planning on minoring in cognitive science on the independent track. Only five courses are required for the minor (although people frequently take more), so it should be easy to complete. I’m not sure how specific your interests are within linguistics, but judging by the list of possible courses toward the language and cognition track, it’s definitely possible for you to complete the minor using only linguistics courses.
