Cognitive Science program at UCB

Hi all,

I’m a transfer student, applying to several UCs for fall 18. I’ve looked into the Cognitive Science program offered at UCB, and I’m kind of disappointed because the emphasis seems to be put on Psychology/Neuropsychology instead of Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning (I’ve only seen one introductory course on AI offered for undergrad studies).

So, my question is: is there another similar major (a hybrid of computer science and neuroscience) with emphasis on computer modeling instead psychology?

Thanks in advance,

The cognitive science major requires 30 upper division units; presumably, that will leave you some free elective space. You can take COMPSCI 188 (artificial intelligence) to apply to the cognitive science major, and COMPSCI 189 (machine learning) as a free elective. However, both courses have more prerequisites than the courses included in the cognitive science major, and computer science courses may be difficult to get into as a non-computer-science major.

Alternatively, you can major in computer science and use your elective space to take additional courses in neuroscience areas.

Thanks for your reply, @ucbalumnus Yeah, at some point I was thinking about dual-majoring in comp. science and cognitive science, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to have my cake and it it too.

The good thing about the cognitive science program at UCD is that they allow one emphasis in comp. science, and so I could easily get a minor in comp. science without getting near the unit limit cap.
