Colby 2007 admissions numbers

It seems that this admission season is shaping up to be as intense as last year's.
Here is a little snippet about admissions in a letter by Colby's president, Bro Adams, to the student body:

"Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Parker Beverage told the board
that Colby hit a new high mark for applications with the putative
Class of 2011. As of last week, he said, the admissions office had
received 4646 applications. Sixty percent of applicants are from
outside New England, and 564 are from ALANA backgrounds, he said. We
won't know the final composition of the class until May, but Parker
reported that 142 students were accepted in the first early decision
round, including students from 13 countries and 24 U.S. states."

Not good news for those of us from New England whose kids applied RD, but not unexpected either. That darned "New Ivies" book...

Rumor has it that EDII decisions will be coming out today--has anyone heard anything yet?

i wonder if rates are still gonna be around 33% or if it will go down.

usually, kids applying to places like colby are already self selecting

Son just got the news--he is in EDII
Yippee

Sounds to me like the rate will be 30% or slightly lower. Colby is already short on dorm space, and with the money they poured into their Social Sciences building and student center, I don't see them building any new dorms any time soon.

Momof2sons, warmest congratulations! Our daughter is a very happy freshman at Colby, which she chose over a number of terrific schools. It's proven to be a great fit and a wonderful community. Don't hesitate to ask Colby parent questions, and best.

congrats momof2sons.

im sure ur son will enjoy his stay at colby

If you don't mind me asking, momofdd, what terrific schools did your daughter choose Colby over?

She got into Colgate, Bates, and three PA schools that were more her safeties: Dickinson, Franklin & Marshall and Gettysburg. She liked every one of the schools, but felt Colby was the best fit.

This may be of interest to prospective Colby students:

As high school seniors anxiously await college acceptances, some seek insights into the admissions process by reading "Behind the Decision," a blog by Dory Streett (admissions). Beyond writing about decision time, she shares anecdotes and observations about what's happening at Colby each week. And it's not a one-way conversation. Students from Waterville to Kenya are making it a dialog by posting comments. Read (and subscribe to) Colby's first blog at

momofdd: did you visit Colgate with your d? What were your impressions,
if you don't mine me asking? My d is looking at it (and probably Colby as well).
Thanks very much.

Eiffel 13,
yes we did visit Colgate in April 2005. We liked the school, the admission people were amazing (along with the yummy ice cream sandwiches - getting to candidates through their stomachs!). The info session was well organized and the tour energetic.
On the surface, Colgate and Colby (and a number of other schools) have a lot in common.
There were two factors which played in Colby's favor with our daughter: no frats/sororities, which was important to her. She felt the Colby environment would likely be more open/less cliquish without frats (and has found Colby to be indeed a warm and welcoming community).
Her other concern was academic, she wanted a school that was very strong in International Studies, and that is a real strength of Colby's.
Both are great schools, it really all comes down to fit. Best wishes to your daughter in her search for the perfect fit!
