Colby College Class of 2019 RD Results

Since a results thread hadn’t been made, I thought I’d go ahead and start one. I know that many other factors go into decisions, but these threads can be a good starting place for gauging one’s ability to get into a school.

    [] Summer Activities: Camp counselor
    [
] Essay: Strongest part of my application and I think it was what made me stand out.
[] Teacher Recommendations: Probably very good. Did not read.
    [
] Counselor Rec: Probably okay. Did not read. Counselor does not get to know students very well.

Reflection:[ul]
[
] Strengths: GPA, unique ECs, internship experiences, writing
[] Weaknesses: Test scores! My ACT math and science sections were a good 6-8 points lower than my reading and writing sections, so perhaps they realized that I have potential in some areas.
[
] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no idea. I have no hooks and my scores are mediocre. My best guess would be the essay. I am very proud of it and I think I interpreted the prompt in an unexpected and refreshing manner.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Smith (early write), Grinnell (early write), Macalester, Kenyon, Mount Holyoke, Whitman, Beloit. Rejected: Wash U.[/ul][/li]
General Comments: I applied to Colby on a whim and expected a rejection. I didn’t visit or show interest. I’m honestly very surprised that I was accepted, especially considering the stats of students who were waitlisted and rejected. I’m thankful that the admissions committee saw something valuable in my application!

[] Strengths: I had the test scores, the rigor, and the passion in my EC’s.
[
] Weaknesses: I didn’t have actual official “AP’s” and didn’t have have more EC’s.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Either any of my weaknesses were heavy factors or there were just way too many people to pick from, and they believed someone else holistically was a better fit for their campus over me.
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’ve been accepted to all of my other schools so far (not going to name all of them, but one is UVM); this is the first rejection. :stuck_out_tongue: [/ul]

General Comments:

I tend to think the worst of situations so I can’t say I wasn’t preparing for or expecting this. I’m okay with it. Colby came onto my list later in the game so it wasn’t like I expressed the most interest early on or anything like that.

[li] Weaknesses: Applied for financial aid (international)[/li][li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Waitlisted at Colorado, Grinnell, Whitman. Rejected at Brandeis, Macalester. Awaiting others[/li]
General Comments:
When you are an international applying for financial aid at LACs, expect the unexpected. I honestly expected to get admitted to colleges like Grinnell and Macalester where a substantial no. of internationals got aid, but I din’t get in, even though my SATs were above 75 % percentile and I had expressed interest.

Colby was the first LAC on my list, and I am glad I got in.

General Comments: I’m disappointed but life goes on

Great stats, hard to figure methodology sometimes.

Well, to be honest, it really is a true combination. Just because you have good extracurriculars or grades doesn’t mean you are good for the school. Colby doesn’t look for simply the world’s smartest people, but the most well rounded who are thirsty for knowledge and the world, which is more than tests and grades. Just felt like I should say this because I’ve been seeing a lot of people talking about how it makes no sense.

Yes it is a combination.By stats I also meant her EC’s which do matter ,Look at the leadership positions and dedication as a 4 year + athlete ( which can tell a great deal about a person) and as a volunteer etc . In my opinion that means more than a one time well written essay (or well coached essay) as to why someone fits. I understand what you are saying and one can “fluff” a resume but there are certain benchmarks that do need to be considered in the process,.

Reflection

[ul]
[
] Strengths: Interview, essay, test scores, long-term commitment to otherwise nice but unremarkable ECs, I speak a second language in Italian
[] Weaknesses: GPA (3.43 overall through end of junior year, but on the rise. 3.31 Frosh GPA, 3.42 Soph, 3.63 Jun, 3.53 first term of senior year due to health concerns, 3.8 second term of senior year). Lack of volunteer/community service activities
[
] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think that my strengths outweighed my weaknesses enough; according to Naviance, I have the lowest GPA from my high school to be accepted at Colby. That being said, after seeing this thread, I think I’m lucky to have been accepted.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] Accepted: Drew University, UMASS Amherst, Brandeis University, Union College; Denied: Wesleyan (EDI), Bowdoin (EDII), Middlebury[/li]General Comments: I hope that I’m proof that you can get into Colby with a subpar GPA as long as you make up for it in other areas. I strongly recommend doing an interview and preparing for it in advance; I think that’s what helped set me apart.

Reflection

[ul]
[
] Strengths: All-around excellent student. I took a class at Colby this year, got an A+, had a wonderful professor who offered to write me a recommendation. Very involved in community. Really great interview. Overcame a huge tragedy in the beginning of the year; now proposing three bills to state legislature. Also a human trafficking awareness advocate.
[] Weaknesses: I didn’t take the SAT very seriously. On paper it doesn’t look like I challenge myself in coursework (I tend to choose classes based on interest, not because I’ll look good to colleges). Coming from a pretty lackluster high school.
[
] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I showed them that I can perform in their classroom. It’s like they actually got a trial period with me.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] Accepted: St. Thomas Univeristy (NB, CA), Deferred and then rejected from Bowdoin[/li]General Comments: The applicant pool was extremely competitive this year. They accepted a fair majority of students ED, so RD was especially tough. It’s definitely an honor to be accepted this year. I wasn’t going to apply until I took my class there this year, and it was fantastic. I had an amazing professor and I really got to know the students and the ‘vibe’ of the campus. It’s really down to earth, inviting and academic, rather than snobby.

[] Interview:[/ul] Fantastic. I had a really engaging senior and we ended up just chatting the whole time. Came out of it feeling really confident, albeit I have good people skills in general.

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: All-around excellent student. I took a class at Colby this year, got an A+, had a wonderful professor who offered to write me a recommendation. Very involved in community. Really great interview. Overcame a huge tragedy in the beginning of the year; now proposing three bills to state legislature. Also a human trafficking awareness advocate.
[
] Weaknesses: I didn’t take the SAT very seriously. On paper it doesn’t look like I challenge myself in coursework (I tend to choose classes based on interest, not because I’ll look good to colleges). Coming from a pretty lackluster high school.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I showed them that I can perform in their classroom. It’s like they actually got a trial period with me.
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] Accepted: St. Thomas Univeristy (NB, CA), Deferred and then rejected from Bowdoin
General Comments: The applicant pool was extremely competitive this year.

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: I’m a good writer, so that probably helped even after procrastinating my essay
[
] Weaknesses: Obviously my GPA is bad. No real reason for that. I just didn’t try very hard. I did not address it anywhere in any of my applications.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Low GPA instills confidence that I will attend if accepted, whoever read mine got lucky last night, who knows
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Middlebury, Wash U
Rejected: Northwestern, Columbia (ED)
Waiting on a couple reaches before I decide [/ul]
General Comments: I really only applied here because they didn’t have a supplement (same with my other two acceptances), but I think there’s some serendipity there, because the more I think about it, the more I feel as though I’d be pretty happy at a place like Colby or Mid.
