International student from prestigious public high school in Vietnam, 1480 SAT, 8.8/10 GPA (above 8 is considered “excellent” here), good EC’s: vice president of a branch of an international NGO, leading positions at clubs in school, senior member at a developer forum, leader of NGO to collect books, clothes and donated over $300 for an orphanage, volunteered at the village for agent orange stricken kids, 1st prize of a citywide debate contest, national honor in English.
I was asking for too much aid (95%). Can anyone who’s been accepted post their stats?
I’d really appreciate it. Thank you so much.
Hello my fellow Vietnamese I am sorry about your rejection. I just got rejected from my top-choice school a few days ago too (Macalester).
One of the truism of the admission process is that the more finnacial aid you ask for, the lower your chance of admission. I know a person who asked for a lot of aids that got higher stats than yours (1560 SAT), a diverse set of ECs with leadership positions, and she got rejected from literally every school she applied to (even the ‘safeties’). If you are asking for too much aid then your best shot of admission to US universities is to apply to need-blind schools or those that give out full-ride based on your credentials.
Also, comparing stats with other international students (more specifically from the same country) is more accurate because the competiton for internationals is always harsher.
I hope you all the best!
@colorado48 , many ED1 admits are recruited athletes and at many schools, the only way legacies get a boost is by applying ED. Effectively, that means that you cannot compare your stats to theirs. They cleared as minimum but we’re bringing something else you do not have. Most schools have limited seats for foreign applicants, and most are very strong, and many do not need FA. Make sure you have a number of targets.
Chance me?
Hi I am a girl from CT. I love Colby. I am not sure whether to apply ED 2 Or RD to Colby. Would ED 2 give me an edge, or would it be similar to applying RD.
SAT: 1400
GPA: 3.72 UW
I take 3 AP classes this year, 1 last year, + many honors classes in the past. (My school does not offer many APs, I take more classes than the average student)
planning on majoring in Computer Science.
Many extracurricular, including: sports team captain, head of peer tutoring program, head of filming club, average amount of community service, many honors awards from school, camp counselor, avid hiker, I backpacked across 200 miles of the AT (Maine section) last summer (idk if that counts as an EC, but I’ll put it just incase).
Honors: Honor Roll freshmen year, High Honor Roll Sophomore, Junior, Senior (maybe). Special honors by school (Honors away of excellency)
Recommendation from Colby Alum.
You have a shot and look like a good fit. If it’s your first choice, by all means, do ED. The benefit to Colby is they know you’ll come and that is helpful to them in creating a class. Nobody really can say how much, if at all, applying ED will help otherwise.
