My D was accepted at Colby as a Presidential Scholar in 2020. She attended a special event for Presidential Scholars, which was virtual due to the pandemic. IIRC there was a panel of professors and students who participated in the program. They shared their projects and experiences. Ultimately my D chose to attend another SLAC. We had visited Colby in 2019, and while she liked it, there were other schools that felt like a better fit. 2020 was a hard year to make a decision since every school’s admitted-students events ended up being virtual. Good luck to your D.
Thanks so much - appreciate it! Out of curiosity, which other SLAC did your daughter decide to attend?
Williams
One of my favorite schools (family members went there) - but I couldn’t get my daughter to apply, unfortunately…I liked the visit much better than she did! : )
My daughter is in her second year at Colby and was admitted as a presidential scholar. She received the email about the program back in February after she’d applied, filled out the form, was accepted in March, and a short time after being accepted received notification that she had been selected as a presidential scholar. Being a presidential scholar at Colby gives some access to opportunities and funding. It doesn’t provide special status like an honors college for housing or course registration or anything like that. But the opportunity to work as a research assistant is great, there is access to opportunity grants which I think a lot of students use to travel, and you can take music lessons your first year for free. My daughter was contacted by the prof she’s working with now in early April after being accepted but before she decided to enroll. They interviewed via zoom. She understood the prof was interviewing other students as well. She heard from her a couple weeks later and knew that, if she enrolled at Colby the prof would select her for the project. They kept in touch as my daughter finalized her decision and then the program coordinator confirmed “the match” after my daughter enrolled. She has enjoyed working on the project the last year and a half. The prof also encouraged my daughter to expand on a paper of her own that she’d written for a class and submit it to an undergraduate research conference. The conference accepted her paper, she attended and presented at the conference virtually, and they selected it for publication afterwards. She never would have thought to do something like that as a first year college student had she not developed the relationship with her prof. From my observations, receiving an email about this or another program may be a positive sign, but it is not a guarantee of admission and the majority of admitted students do not receive it. There are also plenty of opportunities for all students to do research, receive grants, etc. at Colby.
Has anyone’s checklist disappeared?
No, did yours?
Yeah I didn’t look too much into the program as Colby wasn’t one of my super top choices, but I think others gave a very nice description of it!
Nope, just asking
I saw a rumor on Reddit that someone called the admissions office and decisions are coming out on Friday
wow, that seems really early. With such an influx in applications, it’s amazing that colleges are getting through them all ahead of deadline.
Do you have the link to the Reddit page saying this? It would be a nice surprise if they came out on Friday but I’m still nervous!
Hi, was this for undergrad, or transfers?
anyone know if the friday release date is real?
Did anyone call the admission office?
Can someone call the admissions office to confirm?
I called the office yesterday and they just told me it was still by April 1st.
Yes it depends on who you talk to.
Have you called and received a different answer?
Why the heck would you keep calling?
