Colby, Muhlenberg, Davidson, Wake Forest, and Duke for music

Hi! I’m a classical soprano and hoping to major in music in college. I’m looking at mostly liberal arts colleges; my plan is to go to conservatory for masters. This list is kind of random, but if anyone knows about the music programs at any of these schools please comment. Btw, I’m not looking for suggestions-these aren’t all the colleges I’m looking at.

One more thing-I know Muhlenberg is great for MT but I was wondering how the program was for classical voice.
Thanks!!

It’s hard for one to make recommendations without knowing your background, experience (including summers) and performance level.

I have a strong background-started violin when i was four, singing and piano when i was 7-and I also have good grades and ACT scores. I’ve done summer programs and I perform at a high level for violin and voice.

Honestly, none of these programs strike me as well known for classical voice. That doesn’t mean there might not be great faculty at these schools, but they are not programs that lots of VP kids/families are discussing on this board.

I would love to make recommendations but “have good grades and ACT scores. I’ve done summer programs and I perform at a high level for violin and voice.” doesn’t tell anything.

If we were an audition panel and you were introducing yourself and wanted to give us a flavor of who you were - what would you say?

This student wants to major in music within a good program and college. Auditions would come later.

Flavor?? This strikes me as just an odd question. She has indicated that “(she has) good grades and ACT scores. I’ve done summer programs and I perform at a high level for violin and voice.” No one has to indicate their “flavor” in order to get insight into an undergrad program.

The OP is looking for information on three specific programs that rarely get mentioned on this forum.
To the OP—whether or not these programs are ever discussed on this board is no indication whatsoever as to that programs suitability for you. This board is a very small window on to a vast array of opportunities for a young singer.

If you are not getting comments here on the programs, you’ll just need to look elsewhere. Teachers (at your school or private) are a good resource. Visiting the schools and meeting faculty members when you can would be a big plus.

And trusting your gut, based on your research of a good fit, is important. They are all excellent schools academically. If you feel a connection with one of their faculty members or their music school in general that would be great!

Good luck on your continued search.

I don’t have info on those schools either. There may be info in the MT forum on Mulenberg’s voice department, too. Look for a good teacher. As an undergrad that is really important. If you can, have lessons with teachers in those schools and see if you have a good fit. A good teacher will help get you into the grad programs. Ask them where their students are now.
