I don’t know what school would be best to go to, does anyone have any advice on which school is the best? I want a liberal arts school, and I don’t mind a rural location. I would lean towards Colby, but I’m a little hesitant just because it’s only 1800 students. I want to major in biology, (not premed) so a school that will help me on that path is also important. Thanks!
If you really want a liberal arts school, then BC would be out. It’s really a university, with a much larger undergrad enrollment and several graduate schools. Holy Cross and Colby both have very strong bio programs. Colby (I believe) has a strong environmental bent to its bio programs, so if that’s interesting to you you should investigate. Holy Cross is a liberal arts college, but larger enrollment (2900) than Colby, and Worcester (with proximity to Boston) is certainly going to feel less rural than Waterville. Colby is going to have a more outdoor-ish student body, and Holy Cross has the Jesuit overlay. The HC vibe is friendly, kids-next-door types. I went to HC and had a close friend who went to Colby. They’re both great schools. BC is great too, but it’s definitely a larger university setting. All depends on what you want.
As a committed member of Holy Cross, I’m biased toward Holy Cross, but I have a cousin who went to Colby and did great for himself. All I know about biology between the two schools is that if you’d like to go into medical school, Holy Cross has a great acceptance rate to medical school, but from what I’ve heard, if you go pre-med, it’s extremely challenging, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Overall, both great schools. But don’t just focus on your future. You’ll do great whether you go to Holy Cross or Colby. You need to decide which one feels the best and where you could see yourself for four years.
Holy Cross has Division 1 sports and Colby is Division 3 if sports is of any interest.
