Cold Weather

I have been accepted into Penn State University and I am so excited because it is such a good university! The only thing holding me back is the weather. I am used to hot-ish weather and I'm sure that it wouldn't be easy to adapt to the cold. Any tips or comments? Thank you!

I wouldn’t let cold weather hold you back unless you have a medical condition that would be impacted by cold weather. As long as you learn how to dress for cold weather, you will be warm. Winter in that area looks to be about 2-3 months which isn’t too bad considering that you will be home for close to a month of that.

I went to school in upstate NY. Cold and long winters. I still remember a girl from Mississippi that was wearing a down coat and mittens when the rest of us were celebrating the first warm day with t-shirts. But she survived.

My sister went from Hawaii to the northeast for undergrad. I know people from California who went to Ohio, New York, Minnesota, etc. I’ve known others who moved from Hawaii to Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. A lot of people do it, and you just adjust. Sometimes, it’s good to live in a very different environment at some point in your life. You can always move to a warmer environment if you find that you hate the cold. But four years really isn’t that long.

It gives you bragging rights. DH still talks about trekking across Penn State’s Parking Lot 80 in subzero temps.

I go to school in the Midwest and there are many students here from India, Singapore, southern China, southern California, etc that go here and survive the winters. Some start wearing winter coats in the 50s in the fall, when most people are wearing a sweatshirt at most. I don’t personally know any of them well enough to see how they feel in winter, but they must make do.
