hey guys, i've been accepted at colgate and i LOVE everything about the school; the people, the place, the campus, the professors. But, i'm planning on going into medicine and my top pick for grad school would be stanford. question is, how prestigious is colgate and do i have a chance if i keep my grades up and be accepted to stanford out of undergrad? anyone know colgate's acceptance rates into med school? thanks for any help

Colgate is one of those well-planned and well-run schools that you almost never hear anything bad about. When the worst anybody can say about a school is that it's isolated and the weather is cold, you know you've got a winner.

yea i've never had a single bad thing about it but it's only #15 on US News top LAC list. will that hurt my chances of grad school @ stanford? thanks for the reply tourguide!

dittogal...

"It's only #15..." ONLY????
You're joking, right? There are THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of
colleges & universities in the U.S. Get some perspective here.
And there is VERY little significant difference in quality among the top 25 or so...

1) Medicine is professional school, not grad school.

2) Stanford's med school accepts a large number of Stanford students, but many apply. A strong academic record at Colgate will not keep you out of any medical school.

h and b, i wasnt meaning to be biased or anything, but i've heard that it's so tough to get into stanford so i wasn't sure if even a school as good as colgate would be good enough. thanks for the input!

The single most important factor as a med school applicant is your undergraduate grades. Where you went to school is significant mostly because it puts those grades in context. For this purpose, Colgate will be fine, so you should go with whichever suits you best.

two words: Grade Inflation.

More to be found down on the farm, then in the NE.

Go where you love!

Stanford :)

i love colgate, great toothpaste! that's what you'll get when you tell people where you go to school....for the rest of your life.

...........................................

i'm pretty sure i'm going to colgate now. there's just one issue. how is grade inflation specifically? also, anyone know how the party scene is here? i'm one of those who goes to the occasional party, likes to have lot's of fun but i don't want to get wasted every weekend either and sometimes i'm pretty down to earth

Colgate has a reputation as a frat heavy, heavy drinking college. Check it out if this would matter to you. It also has a reputation as a terrific LAC.

Whatever you do, do not fixate on a single medical school. The overwhelming majority of qualified applicants to Stanford medical school are denied. Students with top grades, top MCAT's, and outstanding recommendations are USUALLY denied. Admission is far more competitive than getting into Stanford undergrad. So... if you get excellent grades, MCAT's, recommendations, and experience as an undergrad, then you have a good chance of getting into an excellent medical school. Stanford is an excellent medical school. However, anyone applying to Stanford med is taking a long shot.
