Colgate, Hamilton, Vassar

Dad of an accepted student to these three great LACs asks "which college?"
History, Poly Sci and maybe Econ are main interests with an end goal being high level educator. Comments?

Think it will come down to fit. Colgate and vassar have very different vibes. Colgate more jock oriented and vassar more artsy. Maybe Hamilton somewhere in between the two?

Just what I’ve been thinking after a few more days of research. Son will be making overnight visits over the next few weeks and my guess is one school will clearly stand out in his mind.
Thanks for the input and any other comments are welcome.

All great schools. Congrats to your son! I’m a student at Hamilton and obviously biased, but it really comes down to what you’re looking for. Hamilton has a top notch Econ program with a great deal of alumni connections. Our NYC study away program maybe of interest to you and I suggest you look into it.

The history department here has some of the best professors, but be prepared for a LOT of reading. But, every history major I know loves their major. It’s a very close knit bunch.

While Hamilton doesn’t have an education major, we do offer a minor. We have an excellent program and the professor who oversees the discipline is the sweetest woman you’ll ever meet. I’m considering minoring in education.

Hamilton is a hodgepodge of students. We’ve got super artsy and then we have very athletic, we’ve got
indoorsy people and outdoorsy people, we have partiers and we have those who’d prefer to play board games on Saturday nights. If you come here you’ll find your niche, but more importantly you’ll also make friends who aren’t like you and you’ll be pushed out of your comfort zone. Everyone does their own thing and that’s what is “cool.” Spend some time here and meet the people and you’ll never want to leave!

All three schools offer great academic experience. It really comes down to fit and feel. That is, your S/D needs to figure out which campus and student body is best for him/her. This is a four-year commitment and a good fit makes, or breaks the college experience. My son will be attending Hamilton and we visited Middlebury, Colgate, Colby, Amherst, Williams, U of Richmond, and a few other great schools. All of them offered superb academic experience and a bright future. He spent a weekend at Hamilton and had an overnight visit at Colby/Colgate. He was sold on Hamilton because of its caring & friendly people (students, faculty and staff) and a sense of close community. BTW, Hamilton has a great alumni connections (as Colgate) and if your S/D is interested to land a decent internship/job he/she will have a great network to leverage.

Plan a trip and have an overnight visit. It will clear up a lot of things and your S/D will have an easier time to make a decision. Congratulations to your S/D on getting accepted to these fine schools.
