Waitlisted
Which major: math or physics

SAT: didn’t take
ACT: 29 composite. English (35), math (34), reading (20), science (28). I took the ACT once in December and didn’t do a bit of studying—very low reading score because I was too slow LOL. My AP lit teacher said I was one of the best students she’s had, so I hope the admissions committee saw past the bad score.
SAT II: didn’t take
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Weighted GPA: no weighted at my school
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/120
AP classes: Junior Year==>AP Calc AB, AP US History
Senior Year==> AP Stats, AP Bio, AP lit, AP US government. Didn’t submit any scores.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Student Body Vice President, Robotics (team captain), Social Justice League, Gay/Straight alliance, Varsity chess (team captain my bois), Varsity tennis, NHS, and ocean savers (president).
Job/Work Experience: I worked at HP inc as an intern for a summer and then I worked on a farm cleaning goat pens.
Volunteer/Community Service: I was a peer tutor, and I would often go to the elementary schools as a student mentor. Also I put on all the blood drives at school, and i did a lot of stuff at school (like prom committee) because of being on student council. Nothing huge though.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 7. I liked it but it was kinda boring. I ended up changing it when I applied to other schools.
Supplemental essay: 9. Talked about being inclusive by accepting a homophobe into my gay friend group. It was kinda funny and ironic. I think this was the highlight of my application.
Teacher Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Only saw one from my AP lit teacher. It was good. It made up for my test score. I never saw the rest of them, but I assume they were good. I’m pretty good at math so I think my math teacher said some nice things about me.
Counselor Rec (rating 1-10): uhhh didn’t know my counselor that much but he liked me a lot. Never saw this letter either.
Interview: no

Applied for Financial Aid? YES
State (if domestic applicant): Oregon
School Type: small and rural. I’m from farm town USA.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: female
Income Bracket: me < $25,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Ummm I’m a poor gay girl from a small town in Oregon going into the STEM field.

Reflection: Very surprised I got waitlisted. I was reading through the thread from last year and my stats are nowhere near what other people had.
Strengths: extracurriculars for sure.
Weaknesses: test scores & lack of AP classes at my school.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I guess they liked my personality enough to waitlist me.
Where else you are applying or have already applied…
I was accepted at Skidmore, Lewis and Clark, and Reed.
Waitlisted at Colgate and Macalester.
Rejected from Colorado College and Swarthmore :’)
I’m still waiting to hear from Lafayette and Bucknell. Those are my top two schools. Fingers crossed!

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: for prospective students reading this…college confidential attracts the very top people! The stats and awards and extracurriculars and stuff of accepted people are not representative of all accepted students. Don’t be discouraged to apply! They’re looking for tons of different people. Not everyone has perfect stats, and they know that! Just be yourself.
PS—I don’t think I’ll take a spot on the waitlist because Skidmore gave me a crap ton of money. But I haven’t decided yet.

Accepted.

DS19 Waitlisted
SAT 1560 one sitting
GPA uw 3.8 or 3.9/4 - hard to tell as our school has a weird system that gives extra points for an a+
weighted 4.35/4.5 Top 4% of class
Large Suburban public high school
12+ APs
Couple ECs and leadership positions. Nothing really outstanding.

Ethnicity - White
Gender - Male
Visited campus - tour and info session

Surprised at the waitlist. Who knows what it was. Colgate is need aware - maybe he was yield protected as a kid with divorced parents asking for financial aid even though one parent’s finances made him ineligible for need-based aid. They could have assumed that there wasn’t interest at full sticker price. (this would actually be an accurate assumption, but Colgate was pretty high on the list and there was the possibility of paying full price).

But maybe the essays just didn’t move the AOs. Maybe they just didn’t see a fit.

Accepted with an international with a ton of finaid+Alumni Scholars!

Accepted! I’ve been getting a lot of rejections, so it feels good. I’m from CA and seem to only have east coast choices atm.

@phantomramen Hi! I’m almost positive about committing to Colgate, but I won’t be going for the overnight visit as I’m international and the travel expenses won’t be worth it to me. Thanks for reaching out!

DS waitlisted. Seriously bummed here.

Accepted!

Reflection
Strengths: writing + I participated in what was available on island/at my school
Weaknesses: standardized testing
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Your GPA and test scores aren’t everything. Take time to really think about what you want your essays to convey because ultimately, they represent who you are as a person. Think: If I had to give a TED talk right now, what would I say? (aka wELcOme tO mY TED tALk)

Any word on what the yield will be for Colgate this year? Anyone have a projection? Son is on the waitlist - probably will commit to Hamilton but wanted Colgate.

It will also be interesting to see what the ultimate class size is. Last year they admitted a very large class.

Taken off the waitlist May 6th
