Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): didn’t send
ACT (breakdown): 32C, 33SC
SAT II: didn’t send. should have.
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): ~3.8? School doesn’t do GPA. 95-96% grade average.
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank.
AP (place score in parenthesis): Didn’t send. I was told not to send my AP scores to schools before they accepted me. Might’ve been dumb to listen to that.
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: Got screwed over. Moved to NY from MO for only senior year, missed registration, and was left with leftover classes. However, all classes at my new school are honors, and I got one AP (Gov).
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Received awards are negligible.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Filmmaking Club (founder and president), Elected Class Representative (Freshman-Junior year), Future Business Leaders of America (District Winner, State Finalist), Youth Court (Defense and Prosecuting Attorney), Newspaper (Page Designer, Blogger), Girl Scouts (Bronze and Silver Awards), Student Leadership Team, NHS
Job/Work Experience: Daycare Assistant for my junior year. 13 hours a week.
Volunteer/Community service: Library, Social Services (dealt with independent living homes, tutoring for economically disadvantaged children, and after school programs), Youth Court (cases represented were genuine, kids were sent to a court run by teens instead of legitimate court for first time offenses) … Volunteered in total around 60 hours a year.
Summer Activities: Summer day camp - planned a day camp for local Girl Scouts throughout school year and then led a 7-day camp
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App: 7.5/10 … I could’ve done a lot better but there was a central theme, good grammar, decent organization, and I got personality across. I fear that it came off a tad narcissistic.
Supplement: 8/10. Awful organization, but great point and demonstration of interests and application of self to world.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: APUSH teacher. Loved him. Probably 9/10. Great guy who knew me better than most teachers.
Teacher Rec #2: Biology/Forensic Science teacher. She was the moderator of my Filmmaking Club. 9/10. Able to vouch for my leadership abilities and creativity which I saw as a huge plus. Knew me decently well.
Counselor Rec: 6/10. Just moved to my new school, so she knows almost nothing about me besides my resume.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: N/A

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.
Intended Major: Economics
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Small, private, Catholic, all-girls
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 150K
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.

Strengths: Test scores (barely), profound connections to my ECs, recs
Weaknesses: Essay, counselor rec, ECs that don’t correspond with major, pretty much zero demonstrated interest
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted?: I applied to Colgate without doing much research and assumed from the 28% acceptance rate that I had a decent chance of getting in. The acceptance rate dropped to 10% this year, so I consider myself lucky to be waitlisted.

General Comments:

Other schools you applied to and their decisions: Accepted: Fordham, SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Binghamton, two small MO schools
Rejected: WashU, Bowdoin
Waiting to hear from Union College and Georgetown. I’m pretty much accepting the fact that I need to kiss Georgetown goodbye, but I’m holding on to a sliver of hope.

@collegeissomuch where are people getting the 10% acceptance figure for this year? Last year or was 28.7% --could the acceptance rate really have dropped by so much?

@Emsmom1 WL letter said 770 were admitted out of over 8,500 applicants. Less than 10%, unless other factors are involved in the calculation of acceptance rate. I’m shocked too. Doesn’t seem right.

That is very strange.

How big is the freshman class? Anyone know?

So, it looks like last year they enrolled 775 for the freshman class- unless they are expecting 100% yield, they would have had to admit more than 770 to fill the freshman class.
