yup
What other schools have you applied to?
For the record, Colgate represents a very challenging admit for international applicants, accepting just 5.1% of those who applied last year. Disappointment will be common with such long odds.
I didn’t apply yet. I am thinking of applying to Sewanee or W&L. I like W&L better but I feel like I have to play it safe and go with Sewanee. There are other colleges in my mind but it’s definitely like Colgate University (University of Rochester, Vassar, Reed )Since I am broke as well, I am probably going to go with Sewanee.
I have an unweighted GPA of 90.14 and a weighted 91.7.
I have taken 7 ap’s: AP Calc AB, AP Lang, AP Phy 1, AP Calc BC, AP Phy 2, AP Chem, and AP CS. Due to my visa complications, I was not able to take any of the ap exams.
I have above the 90s on all of the classes except the AP Phy 2- 86 and AP Calc - 87.
MY EC’s
President of the Asian Culture Club ( 9th - 12th)
Captain of badminton team (9th- 10th)
Member of the American football team ( 11th-12th)
Member of the Wrestling team (11th - 12th)
Member of the Math Club (10th -12th)
Member of the Robotics Club(11th - 12th)
What do you think ?
Curious as to the basis of your claim that if you were accepted to either Wash & Lee or to Colgate University that you would receive a full-ride scholarship.
Almost all US colleges & universities award need-based financial aid differently to international applicants than to US applicants.
Overall, your ECs are ordinary. Your chances for admission to any of these schools is likely to be lessened by your need for a full-ride award as an international applicant. Truthfully speaking, your odds of being admitted to any of the listed schools with a full-ride scholarship is well less than 5%, probably closer to 0%, based on your qualifications shared in this thread.
W&L is a very good school. Some publishers list them within top 10 liberal art colleges. What this school is also known for, which is very unique from other liberal art colleges, is that this college is rather conservative. No to say it is good or bad, but it is perceived this way. From what I read, there are many southern conservative white kids attending this school. School videos show many students of colors engaging the school activities, but this is the effort from the college to draw more kids from different ethnic backgrounds. So if you are non white and/or an international student, you may have a good chance to get in.
Sewanee is an awesome school. I just did some more research and many international students love living in the mountain. I could definitely picture myself at the college. I am definitely going to apply to Sewanee
Colgate meets full need (as determined by Colgate) for international students, but needing a large amount of aid will decrease your chance of admission. Not to discourage you from applying, just so you know what you are up against.
Washington and Lee does NOT guarantee to meet full need for international students, nor does Sewanee.
What can/will your family contribute to college costs? I asked this earlier, but do you have affordable options in your home country?
I agree that Sewanee is a very conservative school and might not be the best choice for you.
It is challenging for international students who need full aid. The colleges that are need-blind have low acceptance rates and are difficult to get into in the first place. It is a good idea to find a school in your country that you can afford and you would be okay with, that would be your safety. I would suggest looking back at my earlier replies to your questions from Oct 26 and 28. Good luck.
OP has already received a rejection from Colgate University.
Thanks, I see that now. Just wanted to correct the record that Colgate does meet full need for internationals.
There’s a video about this which lists colleges that provide financial aid to international students. Go to 1 minute and 43 seconds here:
Let’s not revive old threads. The OP asked this question last year. Presumably, they already decided. Closing.
