Colgate vs American????

Down to two schools. I like American more and i think American would be a better fit for me. However, i realize Colgate is considered to be a more prestigious school and it is suppose to have a great almuni network. I value both of these aspects and car a lot about name recognition. I will have to pay the full tuition for both schools. I would like to major in finance with a minor in a law-type area. Which one should i pick?

please help. Any input would be appreciated!

“I like American more and i think American would be a better fit for me.”

Exactly why? Are there things about Colgate i.e. sports, frats, location that you don’t like?

These two schools are so different. Did you apply to more like AU or more like Colgate?

AU is plenty reputable enough to serve you well, and I doubt the advantages to Colgate are sufficient to outweigh being miserable there (if that would be the case).

rhg: i like the location of American. The diversity of American and ive read it has a good business school. Things i dont like about Colgate are its location and lack of diversity.

finalchild: i wouldnt be misrable at Colgate. its a fine school with a great social life and a strong alumni network. For the most part, i applied to schools like American(GW, Miami, Lehigh, NE, Babson, Bentley, Syracuse, Drexel etc…). I like American more than Colgate but i feel like i would be fine at Colgate and i know its the more prestigious school.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?!?!?!?

If it makes you feel better, Colgate is virtually unknown outside of the Northeast. The first time I heard of the school (NYT article) both my mother and I thought it was a training school for Colgate employees, a la Hamburger University. If you like American more than Colgate, go to American. The location makes it much easier to get business internships.

But there is no denying that Colgate is a more prestigious school than American…Right?

You know the answer to your own question.

Now the question is, do you care for social, prestige reasons (which is fine, most of us do even if we deny it and even if we overcome it in the end)?

Or, because you are worried if it will make a real difference in your future success? In which case the answer is NO, especially if you are going to do well and thrive at AU.

Enjoyment of the 4 years and what you’re going to feel like day-to-day is a pretty big deal.

Did you get in at Lehigh? It might be less extreme than Colgate.

AU looks good on the outside, but I’m not certain that is so great on the inside.

All the AU kids use the Whole Foods where I shop at Tenley Circle. They don’t strike me as very smart.

What does shopping at Whole Foods have to do with academic quality?

I got into Lehigh. I like that as much as Colgate. Just wondering, is Lehigh more prestigious than Colgate?

No. Lehigh is about the same or maybe less but is more known as a business and engineering place than liberal arts one. However, it’s less isolated than Colgate and is larger. I just thought it might be a middle ground.

Colgate is much stronger academically
