I kind of doubt many here would know the answer to your question about TAs, though I believe Amherst doesn't really have any graduate programs. Doesn't mean there aren't TAs, though. I had a friend that went there and she loved it. There seemed to be just as much (if not more) partying (they actually hand out water and aspirin to every senior as they process to graduation!) at Amherst, actually. I think senior honors theses of some kind are a bit more common at Amherst, but many at Colgate do them as well. Their town is considerably bigger (and as a result less charming and more dangerous, in my experience). That's probably not all that helpful, but it's all I really know. Hopefully someone in the Amherst forum can answer your question about TAs.

Don't worry about the TAs. They're more like lab or grading assistants, very common in math and sciences.

I have a very good friend who went to Amherst. I think both of us had very comparable experiences and there just didn't seem to be anything that made Colgate better than Amherst academically and vice versa. Amherst is in vicnity of other schools that you can easily access to. Don't mind the whole 5 college thing- Amherst and Smith students very rarely leave thier campuses (why go to a state school like UMass?). There are far more students and you have the towns of Amherst and Northampton to play in (Northampton is just WONDERFUL). Amherst is also 2 hours away from Boston. Colgate is seriously in middle of nowhere and about 4 hours to NYC (same distance as from Amherst).

My best bet for you is just to visit both schools and see which one you like better.
