any thoughts

Colgate is recommended by 99% of dentists. Well, that’s what the commercials say.

^ ^ hahah. I visited both Colgate and Hamilton. I really liked Hamilton everyone just seemed super friendly. When i was walking with my parents students would say hi to me as if they knew who I was. The day I went to Colgate I only saw a few people, I went during my spring break. All of the people I saw though looked like they had just woken up from a long night of partying hahah.

We, the family, thought Hamilton had a good side and a dark side. I am talking about the campus. The “former” female side is ugly.

No reason to choose Lehigh unless you want to study engineering. In which case, I would go to Bucknell.

Of the three you mentioned, Colgate is the best choice. Beautiful campus, excellent academics, good reputation, strong alumni network and good job/graduate school placement.

Wait I’m kinda confused by the above comment on Hamilton’s “dark side”. Is that the only reason you have for picking Hamilton over Colgate? Colgate also has a huge reputation as a drinking school and so does Lehigh. Lehigh and Colgate rank in the top 20 on Princeton Review’s Lots of beer list. Both schools are still great schools, i guess im just playing devil’s advocate.

I believe that the Hamilton “dark side” is in reference to the part of campus that was formerly a women’s college. Not necessarily a negative in terms of the student body behavior, just their thoughts on the appearance of the builidings.

While they may do their fair share of having a good time on the weekends, make no mistake about it, Colgate students are serious students. See this list of Colgate people who have made significant contribtions to business, the arts, education, and government.

Both schools are great but different. I have had the opportunity to talk to a Colgate grad very recently from the west coast. I asked him to compare the two, since he grew up in NY. He said “… although I enjoyed Colgate and played lacrosse there, I wish I could have gone to Hamilton. It is a beautiful campus and great college”.

mithril-- IMO, what was the point of your post? You post on a Colgate thread about someone who supposedly went to Colgate but wished he went to Hamilton because it has “a beautiful campus” and is “a great college.” Colgate also has a beautiful campus ( I, and many college “most” lists, would say Colgate is much more beautiful) and is a great college, (equal to or higher ranked than Hamilton.)

So what makes this alum be disloyal to his alma mater and say he wish he went to Hamilton???

Yes, I was very surprised at his answer, given he was a Colgate grad. Without saying anything further, he seemed to have a sentimental feeling for Hamilton and its campus. He did like his experience at Colgate. He did comment, however that both schools face tough weather.

My experience is that both schools have different personalities, size, specialties and one shouldn’t get hung up on rankings, which are very close. Students/alums from both have a lot of pride in their respective schools and have a friendly rivalry. In November, Hamilton did beat Colgate in the “Trivia Night Showdown”. For 2010’s commencement keynote speakers, Colgate will have a world famous philosopher while Hamilton will have the CEO of US’s largest company, General Electric speak. Upstate NY is fortunate to have two great LACs. Best to visit to determine your own personality match to one of these two great colleges.
