Right now I am enamored with both these schools because of similarities they share (excellent LACs, located in rural upstate NY). I would like to know more about the differences between them in terms of: academic quality, reputation, what the typical student is like, strength of certain departments (English & humanities) and any other major differences anyone knows about. Thanks.

colgate is better academically and socially imo. go there.

Colgate is considerably larger and feels much richer in terms of great facilities and general impression of solidity. I visited with my then h.s. junior several years ago and we felt Colgate presented itself much more impressively, which is not to say that Hamilton isn't a fine school but it just didn't feel the same. You would have to visit and make some careful comparison studies to determien which was a better fit for you.

i looked at both of these schools quite a bit in high school and I thought Hamilton was the better of the two (by quite a bit, actually). They're both very similar schools, though Colgate seemed to be more of a jock and frat school while Hamilton seemed more of a 'new england prep' type of school. I like the campus and the atmosphere of Hamilton better. It seemed much more of an academic campus and it was much nicer than colgates, IMO. I think Colgate has a slightly better reputation than Hamilton, but not by much. The academic quality is probably the same, student body is similar in strength, and both have very highly regarded academic departments. You can't really go wrong with either, but Hamilton would be my choice.

I think Colgate is more renowned and more well known. Part of this is somewhat more respected academics and the other part is the larger class size of Colgate and Division I sports there.

While the two schools seem fairly similar, I get the impression that most people usually don't necessarily like both of them, so I would visit both to get a sense of what would be the better fit. In general, Colgate is more well known for social sciences and to a lesser extent sciences and is a little more pre-professional, while Hamilton is more well known for English and Humanities.

I would go Colgate here.

id do colgate

There is no "better" between these two. Colgate is more well known because of its Division I athletics, not because of superior academics. Some interesting facts -- Hamilton has a slightly larger endowment, which, with its smaller student body, means considerably larger endowment per student. Though both remote, Colgate is slightly more so. Hamilton is at least close to the New York Thruway and 10 miles from Utica. Both are in charming tiny towns and have brutal winters. This has got to me a matter of personal fit. Any attempt to call one "better" is completely arbitrary and not to be listened to.

The schools are both highly selective and have excellent academics. I believe Colgate is slightly more well-known, not because of superiority but simply because of it's Div I athletics and larger student body. However, in terms of the student body, I'd say the two schools are quite different. At least from what I picked up on my visits to both campuses, Colgate draws more of a preppy, athletic, school-spirit-y crowd. Hamilton's students seemed a bit more "nerdy" if you will, intellectual, and quirky. Also, Colgate's facilities seemed more up to date than Hamilton's. Hamilton also doesn't have any Gen Ed courses except one writing intensive course, so if you're looking for that, it's a bonus. I'd go with whichever has a better "vibe" for you, or is a fit in terms of personality. Good luck!

Colgate has a better hockey team.

On the other hand, Hamilton has what may be the nation's most famous intercollegiate streaking team.

This difference may reflect (in the words of a previous poster) the "more of a preppy, athletic, school-spirit-y crowd" at Colgate, vs. the "bit more 'nerdy' if you will, intellectual, and quirky" environment at Hamilton.

Hamilton is definitely a higher-ranked school academically. I have had many friends attend there and have absolutely loved it. Hamilton would be my rec.
