College Acceptance Letter Rumor?

Someone told me that if you're accepted into a college, such as Cornell, you'll get notified as soon as the decision was made. And vice versa, if you get rejected, your rejection letter tends to arrive in the late March (for regular decision).
Is that true? I've applied to Cornell through regular decision and I haven't received any letter yet. I also haven't received any letter (whether it's acceptance or rejection) from any other PRIVATE schools as well. However, I applied to three SUNY schools (state schools in New York state) and got a 3/3 so far. I haven't get rejected anywhere else yet, so I'm not sure if the rejection letters come along with the acceptance letter at the same time.
Maybe private schools do this differently. But I'm afraid that I may get rejected from my dream school.
So, I'm just wondering whether or not is true that you're probably rejected if you haven't received your letter now. In other words, does Cornell send out acceptance and rejection letters all at once? Or does it notified the accepted students as soon as they get accepted and rejected the students at the end of March.

Some colleges within Cornell have sent out a small number of acceptances, others none, depends on which college. Colleges either have rolling admissions (and send decisions as made) or not (and send in huge batches
at one or more stated dates). Depends on the college, you can not generalize about “private” colleges.

No thats not true. Not sure where u heard these rumors, but just check out the class of 2018 forum… Its mentioned several times that ALL non-hotelie/ILR decisions come out on march 27.

Some schools within Cornell need to abide by Ivy League’s agreement to send out decision notifications on a particular day. If you applied to one of those schools, you will not hear until that day. I think this year maybe Mar 27.

If you applied to Cornell’s Hotel school or ILR, then you could recieve admissions result anytime during March with the last ones coming out late March (March 27th this year). If you applied to the other schools like CAS, CALS, CoE, or CHE then you will find out ONLY on March 27th starting 5pm EST unless you receive a likely letter which is pretty much an unofficial acceptance.

What does the likely letter say?
