HI Mom--"My friend's daughter is at UC Irvine's Honor College"...
This college is twenty minute's away from us but my daughter wants the east coast...; )

There is a lot of growth in college. There is a definite attraction for going to the East Coast--it truly is different from CA. My son has applied to a few schools on the East Coast as well--where any of our kids will actually end up is anyone's guess. <grin></grin>

Hi andi, I know you've been getting tons of messages, but could you please clear your PM box? I've been trying to PM you and got bounced!

What is a "likely" letter?

Likely letters are sent by the university to students who applied RD and after I guess a pre-screening of your applications the ADCOMs decide that unless something in your applications turns out to be false you will be receiving an offer of admissions when the RD decisions officially come out. My son received likely letters from Duke, Stanford and UVA. The Stanford letter actually stated that my son has been offered admission to the class of 2010.

Hi APSDAD,
Last week, my daughter received a letter from UVA stating that her credentials and ECs were outstanding, but then urging her to visit the campus, which is a long 12 hour drive for us, requiring her to take yet more time off from school and spend more money on gas and hotels.
Somehow, I don't think this was a likely letter.....and I am hesitant to spend the extra funds when I am not sure what this letter is saying...

I wonder why schools ask parents to go to the added time and expense of visiting when they are sending out likely letters at the same time to more coveted students.... I guess her 34 ACT score (35 in science) just is not viewed as that competitive, even though it places her in the top 0.5 percent of test takers..... maybe i'm just suffering from application burn out...
Anyway, congrats on your son--- it must be nice to have so much choice early on...

hi clayvessel:
My son got a UVa likely letter last year and I believe it also urged him to visit..although he was a registered visitor from a day spent there junior year and we are In-state. They have so many applicants that I suppose demonstrated interest is hard to track.
I think it is highly likely that you have a likely letter in your hand. If you can't spare the time to get to Charlottesville, and simply don't know which school she would accept in April yet, why not offer "demonstated interest" in another manner. My S wrote the schools where he received likelies...(two) a SHORT email addressed to his adcoms...or maybe it went in the US Mail..I can't recalll..that expressed how honored and encouraged he was by their interest in him, and made brief references to the things that made him "realize he could be very happy at College X" when he was there as a junior.
The likely letters did in fact increase his love for each school...who doesn't like being wanted? hang in there....
