I believe PSU auditioned about 350 this year for a class of app 16 - 20

Rard's mom
In regards to your question about waitlist - Absolutely! I'm a mom with 2 kids in MT programs. They have so many friends that have been waitlisted and got into the programs. These include: Carnegie Mellon, Michigan, BoCo,
BW, Emerson, Point Park, and Otterbein. In fact d2 was one of the girls on the waitlist for Otterbein last year. Doctor John explained the process on cc a while back. But they offered 4 spots to 4 girls and waitlisted ?I think 4?. Two accepted right away, but 2 decided to go somewhere else. One was a soprano and they offered the soprano on the waitlist her spot and the other was more of a mezzo/belter, dancer and they offered that spot to my d.
Otterbein does cast their class because they only take 8. I'm sure there are some other small programs that also do this. However, I don't think it is quite as specific as.... tall, blonde, etc. The fact is, it would be difficult to cast shows if all 4 women were strong character actresses or all 4 were inguenue types. So they do shoot for a variety.
Also, keep in mind all these people posting about the multiple offers they have - remember, they can only attend one program

OCU & rossji % question:

Those of you looking at OCU - I think you will love it! Also, if you are talking conservative vs. liberal politically, (here I'm taking a chance and mentioning both off-limits subjects - politics and religion) OCU is a United Methodist school, and I'm Methodist in a state nearby. The United Methodist Church is very open minded and accepting of different political views. In my church we have some of the top politicians in our state that are in both major political parties. I think historically the church has leaned on the liberal side. Give it a try - you may be pleased.

rossji - As we've visited schools for information, I've found that the great majority take under 10% of the people auditioning. Some are as low as 2% or 5%. You can send me an e-mail if you have specific schools you wonder about. I'll check my notes.

Just want to let you know that it is not easy getting specific numbers and breakdowns for MT programs. You can get a ballpark, but if they keep close tabs on the exact numbers, they do not release them anywhere. There are a lot of "phantom" applicants according to S's advisor who has been working with kids applying to audition centered programs for years. Many kids start the process thinking that the MT is a "hook", and yeah, it is, the wrong kind of hook---more the old Broadway hook where you get yanked out of running--LOL. And when they realized what is entailed in expense, scheduling and chances, they drop out of the running. Also many of these programs have academic cuts built in that they really don't like to discuss. They may well be able to get someone in if they really want him, but for the most part, high SATs and grades are a bigger bonus than many realize. Again, getting precise info on this is difficult. And getting any yield numbers is impossible, so it is very difficult assessing ones chances. But given that any college that has less than a 40% accept rate is chancey and below 25% is a lottery ticket, some MT programs are often more selective than than the ivies.

Hey everyone. My mom turned me on to this site about a week ago and I thought it time to enter the discussion. I have been accepted into Pace MT (rolling admissions) Buffalo MT, Nazareth BM in Musical Theater and Syracuse ED BFA Acting (which I accepted--there is a story to that) I also applied to several non-audition schools and had a string of schools I had auditions set up for. Anyways an aswer to the question about acceptances my notes from Syracuse say that last year they had 600 auditioners for 60 spots open(1/2 for acting 1/2 for MT) and this year they expected higher # of auditioners. OK, when picking schools I knew I wanted to stay in State or go to a close by State(I am from NY) so that eliminated all those other schools that are mentioned on the board OCU, CM, Point Park etc... I visited many colleges last year and this summer and fell in love with Syracuse University. I loved the people, the campus, the program and the opportunities that are there for dance teams and etc... So I decided to do ED, i applied to both the MT and acting program. I auditioned in the Fall and received a letter that I was deferred. I contacted the woman I had my admission interview with(for the those in the future I highly recommend doing an interview on the campus or in your area if they come, it gives you a personal contact person) and explained to her that inbetween this time my SAT's went up 100pts (to 1200) and I asked if I should audition again (Syracuse gives you this option) she said she would get back to me. When she did she said a second audition would not hurt (I would describe myself as a fairly strong dancer, a good actor and a well trained soprano--when I sing you would say what a really pretty voice not WOW what an incredible voice). So off to NYC I went to audition again and incredibly I got an email about 2 weeks later that they were offering me a slot as an ED candidate in the acting program and they needed to know ASAP, which I thought was bizarre because I didn't think I would hear until regular decision time. Because actors can audition for MT shows and I am an advanced level dancer I can dance in the upper levels classes where there is more room, take applied voice lessons AND re-audition in October for the MT I figured I couldn't lose. Not to mention I think acting might be the right direction for me, and as an acting major it gives my course schedule alittle more flxibility. Anyways when speaking with my admissions interview person she said they really liked my perseverance (sp)---I took my SAT's 4 times, interviewed, and auditioned twice and stayed in constant contact with her.

I agree with jamimom regarding stats. There is very few schools that really say it all. I wrote a lengthy post on this in mtc part 37, page 11 regarding NYU and a few others. Other years CMU has more than 10 in their class - last year CCM ended up with considerably lower numbers than usual because people did not pick the program. NYU goes through a large percentage from Tisch to the academic review.
Lets just say that the statistics are tight for majority of these programs, so congrats on accomplishing these minor miracles!

shortnsweet:

that is an interesting story, good thing you didn't give up and it worked out.On the MT thread 39 they are tallking about finding what is BEST FOR YOU not for others and not for what others might think. All these programs have much to offer. Also as mentioned above grades ARE important, the day of the "dumb dancer" (I do take offense) is over!!!!!

My son was accepted today to the BFA Musical Theatre Dept at the University of Arizona, as was a good friend who also tried out there. UA is wanting an answer by April 4th, and we had been thinking of going out to see their production of Rocky Horror Picture Show if he got in to help decide, but that's not until a week later. But given their comparative cost, this will be very hard to turn down.

Congrats Cato! We've heard good things about the program there, and if the money's right, it's hard to say no! Hope it works out for the best for your S and his friend!

Cato--That's great news for your son and for you:). We saw Carousel this fall at UA. If you want info, you can email me. Why do they need an answer before the May 1 or whatever it mutually agreed upon college date????????? Does anybody know? Did your son audition on Feb 18/21? Just curious. We weren't there, but my D is planning to audition there next year.

Cato- CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

Great news, Cato!

I too received my Arizona acceptance letter today! Very exciting! I think it's a great school and a great program!

Yes, he auditioned the 21st. I assume they want to know before the final date in case the answer is "no" so they can take somebody else.

collegebound87, when did you audition?

Congratulations to your son on the U of A, Cato. If you can make it to Rocky Horror, I'm sure it will be good. A friend of ours is playing Frankenfurter and should be really good. He just played Sylvia in a community theater production of Ruthless and was great.

I sent in a video tape (risky I know). I was back east auditioning for Boston Conservatory and NYU the weekend they held the auditions, so I had no other choice. But luckily, it didn't affect anything!

Congrats to all of you who got acceptances at U of A today!

Congrats to Cato and collegebound 87! I am so happy for everyone's successes. It's so exciting to see how this will all play out.

Way to go, collegebound 87!

It's amazing that within just a few weeks, after all these months -- years!! -- of preparation, this will be resolved one way or another for just about everyone......

We went to visit U of A last week and we were very pleased with the program. They had approx. 95 audition for MT and Theatre. They accepted 25 for both programs. 14 for MT if I recall. We are seeing Rocky Horror at the end of April. I'll be glad to report if anyone is interested.
