College accounting preparation and Big 4

I am currently a freshman in college finishing up my prerequisites this semester. My major is Business, Accounting. Next year I will be taking my first accounting class (Act 201) and want to get off to a solid start since that is my major. I don't have much experience in accounting as the only other class I have taken was my senior year in high school. I took a semester long accounting course which was just an easy A goof off class. Anyways, to prepare for my accounting course next semester is there any books or references that anyone could recommend that I read over the summer so that I have an idea what to expect when I get there? I should have plenty of time as my summer is not that busy. I need to do good and keep a high GPA so that I can get an internship and eventually a job at a Big 4 accounting firm.

Next, what exactly can I start doing now to distinguish myself from others so that I can intern with a Big four accounting firm? what do they look for in a student? what other things should I be doing besides keeping a good Gpa? I have a job, should I intern as well? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You need to have a strong GPA and pick up a few minors.

Get involved in stuff on campus. Aim for leadership positions. Not only are they learning experiences, but you’ll have stuff you can talk about in your interviews.
