College admission and MIP

My 16 y.o. (will be 17 in March) kid considering to plea for MIP in Ohio. Can that affect her acceptance to college (will they be able to find out it)? We will not be requesting a Federal financial help.

You should consult a lawyer and see about getting deferred adjudication/probation. If she does have to plead guilty, see about getting the record expunged. This is not something she will want on her record going forward. It could affect college admissions (and will have to be disclosed on most applications) and also employment.

In Ohio you have to wait 2 years before applying for expungement - so yes they could find it out. Is there any other way to get around the plea to MIP (or is that the lesser charge)? Can she do “treatment in lieu of conviction”? I would definitely try to get aroung the MIP plea if at all possible. Also, was the MIP for alcohol or drugs? Alcohol may be easier to explain away - but drugs not at all.
