Hi there

My name's Dominik, I am 18 years old and living in Switzerland. I will finish highschool in June 2010 and my biggest dream is to study medicine in the US.
My problem is just that I dont know whether I am good enough to get into a good pre-med program and, later on, in a good med school.
My native language is not English and I am pretty sure, although I did not take the SAT yet, that I will never be one of those guys who have a 4.3 GPA and a 1590 score in the SAT.
So, honestly, please tell me whether you think I have a chance in the US or whether I rather should stay and study in Switzerland.
Another disadvantage of me is that in Switzerland (and probably in the whole rest of Europe), extracurricular activities, community service etc., all those things which seem to be very important in the US, are not cultivated. The only extracurricular activities I do are playing the piano, learning Spanish and going to the gym.

Please tell me, honestly.

Regards,

Dominik

It is extremely difficult for international students to be admitted to medical school in the US. It would be better for you to do your medical degree at home, and then come to the US for your specialization training afterwards.

For advice more specific to your situation, go read the International Students and Medical Students forums. You can reach them by clicking on “Discussion Home” in the upper left of this screen and then scrolling down.

Thank you for your fast reply. However I have to say that the way you suggest is not possible, I already checked: If you want to go to the US for specialization training, you have to do med school in the US and have an american degree…

Every single year people come here to do advanced work. After graduating from a foreign medical school, they have to take the special exams for graduates of foreign medical schools in order to be admitted to one of these programs. I personally know several people who have done this - including US citizens who chose to do medical school overseas.
