I am an Indian student and my Counselor, after checking my profile, says that I will get full tuition scholarships in the following colleges if I get the following SAT Scores. Is he right ????

University Name SAT Score for 100% Tuition Scholarship

Texas A&M College Station 2150+
Drexel University 2100+
Babson College 2100+
University of Notre Dam 2200+
Illinois Institute of Technology 2050+
SUNY Buffalo 2100+
University of Massachusetts Lowell 2100+
University Of Maryland 2100+
Texas Tech University 1900+
City University of New York 1900+
Penn State University Harrisburg 2000+
Rochester Institute Of Technology 2100+

I will be contacting my counselor only after I get a reply. So please help ....

I believe that is not correct. Many colleges have numerous merit awards available but they seldom depend solely on test score, there are not many for full tution but more common is some portion of tuition and for many that is a small portion of the annual tuition, and the small number who actually get full tuition have very high GPAs and test scores.

Notre Dame doesn’t give out full tuition merit scholarships.

An SAT of 2200 is the norm, not exceptional. Many students with that and higher are rejected every year. So no, don’t expect anything special for it.

Colleges don’t base admission solely on 1 test score…even 2400+ won’t guarantee you a spot.

Do you think he meant you would need that SAT score to be considered? And unless it’s a specific scholarship because of your nationality that we don’t know about, would doubt it.

Many colleges that do have automatic scholarships post the criteria on their websites. Almost all of the ones I’ve seen consider GPA instead of or in addition to test scores.

Also, you’re most likely to qualify for merit scholarships at schools where your qualifications place you above the 75th percentile of admitted students. The percentile information for most colleges is available through searches on CC’s website or the College Board’s (among other places).

My Counselor has checked my GPA and all the stuff and then made this shortlist telling me that he will help me secure full tuition scholarship through merit based or need based aid … if I get the SAT scores I mentioned … I am an international student … so is it possible …

But, seriously, Anirudha, happymom’s question above is very important. Full-tuition scholarships are not all that common for U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents. If you’re not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, they’re even several times harder to get. I suspect either you’re being given bad advice (for a high price) or misunderstanding the advice you’re getting. I fear it’s the first one.

He’s not right. If he’s saying that those scores are guaranteed to get you full tuition scholarships, he’s so wrong. City University of New York schools, for example, have a full-ride honors program but it’s extremely competitive and a 1900 alone is unlikely to put you in the running.

Thanks guys for your advice … I guess he is duping me … He says he has many contacts with which he will help me secure scholarships .at those colleges … Is this even remotely possible ???

Many College Advisors claim to have contacts at major institutions who can get you in. A few even might. At least this one has some standards and is telling you that you need some reasonable standard to get a scholarship.

To your question – is it remotely possible that he has contacts that will help you secure scholarships at some of those schools – yes, it’s remotely possible. Is it remotely possible that it’s a sure thing – unless the school has a published policy (which you can look up yourself), I doubt it.

Thanks Zyphyr15 for your advice … So I am thinking that I should give him a chance … I did check the websites of the schools he shortlisted for me … They do give need based or merit based full tuition scholarships … He says that he will just help me secure those scholarships in one of the 12 schools he mentioned …

That is incorrect. You mention he said those are on his list for possibly getting merit or “need based” aid. More than half that you list are public universities, none of which offer any need based aid to internationals.

My Counselor says that once I achieve his target SAT Scores he will complete the college applications for me … he will do everything from writing the Essays, Recommendations, Scholarship Applications …and all other things … and then secure me a full tuition aid … I don’t know if it will be merit based or need based or combination of both …

<he will=“” do=“” everything=“” from=“” writing=“” the=“” essays,=“” recommendations,=“” scholarship=“” applications=“” …and=“” all=“” other=“” things=“” …=“” and=“” then=“” secure=“” me=“” a=“” full=“” tuition=“” aid=“”> I don’t know about the recommendations and scholarship application, but you should definitely write the essay yourself. It is against the code to have someone else write your college application essay.</he>
