I've heard recent news about colleges starting to consider a student's mental health as a factor in admissions, like if a student is suicidal they will consider denying him/her admission because they don't want to have to deal with insurance, lawsuits etc. I have bipolar disorder type II, SAD, and ADD and I am a bit concerned. Will my illnesses affect my admissions chances? Also, because I take medication, will the school's psychiatrists be able to work with my insurance company to get my medications and such? Thanks so much.

I doubt that having conditions that you are aware of and have under control will do much to affect admissions decisions. If you are qualified, you have a shot. I don't even think colleges get to see your mental/physical profile until after you're admitted (correct me if I'm wrong).

Hell, write about it for your essays.

It will probably affect your chances if you disclose, but it certainly won't kill them either.

If your grades were affected at any point, it should be addressed in your counselor recommendation. Sit down with your school counselor and talk about if and how the recommendation will acknowledge and address the issues you face. Your counselor can vouch that you are doing well enough to be ready for college.

Best of luck with the college process!

Thanks very much.
