Has anyone here paid for the services of a college admissions consultant or coach? I have been reading about some of their services and prices. They seem to be very expensive. Have they helped anyone in this forum? Please let me know.

Rip-off..........

they are worth it if u are seeking direction... considering college counselors for the most part are unhelpful several sessions with someone who knows what they are doing, although expensive might be the best investment u make..

I would say that doing your own research to make your own plan would be best. Ask on this forum for advice. I found that the people who post here are very helpful. I agree with CC2UC. I don't know about universities, but community college counselors are very uninformed. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM! I found out the hard way and have wasted 2 semesters taking irrelevant classes. If you can afford it, a college admissions consultant could be a great help.

yeah...hey i know plenty of people who got in to good schools without a PAID counselor. There are people who are desperate to get into their dream schools and can afford the $20000. But you dont need it.
I for one never had much help from even my own school counselor. She was a wonderful person but didnt have much experience in students applying to top schools.
Its really not necessary.

yeah i hired a college admissions consultant and she didnt help that much. she told me to apply to more back ups, but i didnt even listen to her b/c i got into a good amount of the schools that i applied to.

she also wasnt helpful AT ALL with improving my essay. and she has a phd. i showed my essay to my english teacher and he was able to help me a lot more than she did.

haha cc2uc, that's a sweet name

Hell no. elsijfdl is the best name.

I think a College COnsultant can really give you the focus you need. While I was applying as a freshman< i did it completely on my own and found myself rejected from a lot of potential schools just because I didn't really know what to emphasize. As a transfer, the 2nd time around, I had a good grasp on what was missing and got into the schools that turned me down (with the same stats). I think the College Confidential Consultants might be pretty good, since they say they guarantee u and all.

Your CC counselors probably suck because you guys go to CC that is more for adults/working professionals/etc...

I think schools like DVC, SCC, etc should have a good handful of experienced/helpful counselors. Am I right?

"Am I right?"

Nope. All of the cc's I have been to are geared towards transfer students.

What (C)ccs have you been to? Community colleges have an obligation to serve more interests than just transfer students. And although many greatly encourage transferring, most have extremely small numbers of transfers. There are a feeder schools that send a vast majority of transfers, while the rest send less.

Saddleback College, Irvine Valley College, Santa Monica College, Ventura College, Pierce College and Moorpark College

My point is that I have experienced college counselors from schools that focus on transfering students. They almost always give inaccurate and/or incomplete information. The only information they get correct is the generic stuff that you can usually find on the school's website.

my bad. i assumed the major transfer schools would have the best counselors...but i guess you find horrible counselors everywhere.

Yeah, just make sure to research for yourself and you will be fine. I just found out what my counselor told me about a major prereq was wrong. I usually call Haas to double check what my counselor says. ;)

i had excellent councelors, even though i already came in knowing what i needed and had a lot of my own reaserch to back it up.

Its not a councelors job to prepare you, you by all means SHOULD do the reaserch on your own.... and then verify with a councelor. You will be surprised how much help they can give you if you know what you want. Its not their job to decide what you want to do .

How many people do you think come into counceling saying, i want to transfer what coursess should i take for my "GED" ......... thats reality , most people dont know the diffrence between GE and GED. And also tons of people come in saying i want to transfer, but i dont know where to and i dont really know what i want my major to be.

Dont blame the councelors. Even though some do suck, a lot of them are good if your prepared.

I think you were one of the very few who had a good counselor (or, like u said, u already knew what you needed). I would have to disagree w/u on the councelors job. I think their job description IS to prepare and help students. Maybe i'm being too critical, but I also believe they should go beyond academics and help w/students' personal problems. Most of my experiences (and most of my friends') w/councelors did not help me. The only time they helped me is when I wanted to take a course overload and needed their signature (LOL). I mean (from my previous post) 2.85 gpa and apply to Haas. LMAO. He didn't even encourage me to do extracurricular activites. I must have been crazy, but I trusted him and took two courses that only tranfered to Haas. LOL. It's suppose to be the student's job to do well in their classes. It's suppose to be the counselor's job to help us decide which courses to take for our major and goals. They are paid to do their jobs. Hell, we pay them. All the good advice I have gotten regarding academics was from my peers. I think if conselors were as good as I think they should be, there wouldn't be half as many threads in these forums.

A lot of people dont know what they want,
if you come to councelor and say, I want to go to UCLA, major in Economics, tell me what i need to do,
they will give you the right advice, being

igetc
major prep (assist)
TAP
and extracurriculars
and high GPA
(even though i got in with having only 1 of those )

and which one is that malishka?

you only had one thing from all the stuff you just listed!

and i agree. I, through my own research, have learned more about CC and the transfer process, then a lot of my community college friends have ever been told...

the only thing a student needs is internet access...thats half the work...counselors should just be there for guidance not dependence.
