I honestly believe that searching for leadership is one of the biggest flaws in college admissions today. Leadership like starting a nonprofit or organizing a river cleanup or starting a protest-- that’s leadership. But in high school, titles like President for clubs means almost nothing. Those titles are given out in what is basically a popularity contest, no matter how much of a leader you are-- people want to vote for their friends! And in addition, the president barely does anything, just occasionally helps the club advisor in some way.
Am i bitter because I’ve never been elected as an “official” in a club? Maybe. But colleges should look for what really matters, not empty titles.
