<pre><code>The story I am about to tell is not completely unique, and definitely not the worst case scenario. I realize that many, or even most, families have had hard times financially. Still, I feel I must summarize my past to help explain what attributes I have attained from it.
Growing up, our family of five was far from what one would deem ‘wealthy’. Paycheck to paycheck was the norm, along with occasional trips to the food pantry. However there did come a span of time when my family’s financial stresses weren’t so worrisome. While I was starting middle school, my parents bought their first house, a new car, and my mom even started her own cleaning business. This was short lived however, since four years later my parents announced their decision to get a divorce. My dad moved out and the house was foreclosed; my mom became a single mom with three kids, two dogs, and one small duplex. As you can imagine the money was, and still is, tight.
Throughout high school I was blessed to have many of my class fees, field trip fees, and even meal fees paid for with aid from the school. I’m proud to say that I did not take this for granted. In fact, I looked at this as an exciting opportunity and made the most of it. Not only by shooting for excellent grades, but also by squeezing out as much knowledge as I could from every subject studied. This continues to be my perspective as I further my education. By looking at college not as an obligation, but as a privileged opportunity, I am able to go above and beyond what is expected of me to receive a good academic standing. Although it is incredibly gratifying to see that my efforts have resulted in a perfect GPA my first semester, the intrinsic motivation of learning itself is what pulls me to class in the morning.
I cannot be more thankful that I was able to make it this far educationally despite my financial circumstances and I am passionate about making it worthwhile, which is why I have made the decision to pursue a degree in nursing at UW-Madison. The health field is an area of endless possibilities that I cannot wait to explore. It is also a way for me to give back to the community by helping others in need. Acceptance into UW-Madison would be the opportunity of a lifetime and one that I would be very grateful to have. With confidence, I can say that my enrollment at this university would not be taken for granted.
