College Admissions Statistics Class of 2020: Early Decision & Early Action Acceptance Rates

Isn’t it surprising that Brown and Penn get more applications than Yale and Princeton do?

I had that thought too. But I think Brown attracts a certain type that is unique among the Ivies (open curriculum, etc), and Penn may be perceived as somewhat easier to get into? And in a “better” city?

I suppose we’ll see what the final admit rates are soon.

The reason Penn is perceived as easier to get into is because it has a larger freshman class than any of the other Ivieis except for Cornell; so, more kids apply, but there are more seats; thus the higher acceptance rate than HYP, etc.

Stanford has a 28:1 applicant to RD admittee ratio. I remember the Stanford campus admissions info session holding roughly that number of impressive, brilliant high school students; it’s just crazy to think that the school can only choose one person out of that group to let in the door.

@spayurpets It’s really surprising that Vanderbilt’s RD is only 8.8% acceptance. That is much lower than I expected.

The admit rates for the most selective universities keep getting lower and lower. At this rate in 10-15 years time all top 25 U.S. universities are going to have single digit admit rates. God knows how selective Stanford or Harvard would be, I just can’t imagine universities having an admit rate of 1% or lower so hopefully the admit rate stays above 2%. If you compare the admit rates now to what they where 20 years ago, hell even 10 years ago the gap of the admit rates is shocking.

Ali1302 is right and the changes have been dramatic and somewhat underreported. In 2005, University of Chicago’s acceptance rate was 40% and 10 years later it was 8%. Those numbers are exceptional but the trend is universal, particularly at the elite, private schools. There are reasons for the changes but it’s still a bit surprising since the number of students has not risen over that time.

I think the Common App has caused some of the increase in the applicants and also many more foreign students. This is from a recent WSJ article:

“There are 1.13 million foreign students in the U.S., the vast majority in college-degree programs, according to a report to be released Wednesday by the Department of Homeland Security. That represents a 14% increase over last year, nearly 50% more than in 2010 and 85% more than in 2005.” http://www.wsj.com/articles/international-students-stream-into-u-s-colleges-1427248801
