@Britsmum Not sure I can refine the Skidmore numbers without knowing how many ED applicants they had. They did say there was a 33% increase in ED applications year over year, so if anyone has the number of ED applications for Class of 2019, that would helpful.

@CA1543 I dug around and it looks like CMU updated their admissions site with current Class of 2020 data. I’ve aggregated it below, but note that CMU reports each school separately, so people should look at the individual school data for more information. For example, the acceptance rates range from 6% for the School of Computer Science to 25% for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. (And CMU does not break out their ED/RD but does provide enough data to calculate a yield). https://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/undergraduate-admission-statistics

Thanks @bronze2. I still have to work out the math for Chicago, but it certainly looks like the 4% RD admission rate that some people reported was exaggerated.
That was information given by the Dean of admissions during admit weekend and it is in line with the stats reported above.
Approx 10% were admitted early from a pool of 12,015 EA applicants (Again disclosed during Admit weekend by University). An RD rate of 4% and approx 80 taken off the wait list (information shared by adcoms to candidates) would give you the total of 2.482 admits and the 7.9% admit rate.
I think a higher yield compared to last year, drove down RD admit rate.
@VeryLuckyParent, not sure how you got that. Let’s suppose that they admitted half EA and half RD, that would be 1241 acceptances per round. The EA acceptance rate would be 10.3%, which corresponds to your information. But the RD acceptance rate would be 1241/19,396, which is 6.4%. (Even if you subtract out 80 waitlist acceptances, that gets you to 6.0%–and what do you propose doing with the waitlist acceptances??).
Looking at this from the other direction, if the RD acceptance rate was 4% that would mean that they accepted only 776 RD applications, which is extraordinarily low, and the EA acceptance rate would be based on 1706 EA acceptances or 14.2%, which is much higher than stated or normal for Chicago. Notably, the last time that UChicago reported its EA acceptance numbers (to the New York Times in 2013), the number of acceptances was 1380 or 13.4%. What are the chances that Chicago EA acceptances have risen by 326 over the last two years, which your 4% RD acceptance rate necessitates. I’d say zero chance. I think it’s much more reasonable to estimate that Chicago had about a 10% EA acceptance rate and a 6% RD acceptance rate.

It depends on how you work the Math. You are ignoring the number of applications they deferred from EA round into RD round. Since these applications were reconsidered/reexamined in the RD round, the 4% number includes these applications and it is reflective of the chances any average RD applicant has of being admitted, because he/she is competing in the total pool which includes new RD apps + deferred EA apps. By removing these deferred applications from the pool (I think this is what you did, by considering the RD pool to be only 19,396), you are misstating the odds any applicant has of getting into a school in the RD round, because in the RD round, it is not just the fresh apps that are looked at, it is a lot more than that and the RD applicants are competing against the deferred applicants for a spot. Since the whole point of the Admit rate percentage is to give a person an idea of their odds of getting in, ignoring the deferred apps overstates an applicant’s chances.
Now Chicago doesn’t release what percentage they deferred, so we don’t know the exact number, but you can make reasonable estimates based on what other schools do, which is around 75% are deferred, and only a tiny number is outright rejected. Since the Dean of admissions himself stated the 4% number, I am more likely to believe that number.
Now I know that one of the objections could be that “Aren’t you double counting these apps?” No. Because they don’t double count them in the overall application numbers. Those numbers only count all apps once, irrespective of how many times they are looked at.
