My daughter is in the 5th grade and she was just suspended for the first time for 1 day. My concern is that this will be on her permanent record and will something like this follow her for the rest of school and affect being admitted in to college. Please advise.

No worries there - colleges will only ask about disciplinary actions during high school.

Do be sure to learn and understand all of the parameters of the situation your daughter is in, as she may need help if her behavior is a reaction to something else. Wishing you the best.

S was suspended twice his freshman year in HS. They didn’t affect his college applications at all.

No, this will not affect her being admitted into college.

I think I hear the sound of little goat feet going trippy- trap over a bridge.

On the chance that this first post is a genuine concern, I think that only disciplinary issues in HS are seen in college applications.

If I were you, I would address whatever got your D suspended so that she does not become generally disaffected from her school and peers. But worrying about her permanent record is unnecessary.

Maybe a ■■■■■, but some people do actually think there is something called a “permanent record” that contains every detail of your academic life from kindergarten onward, is kept at some central location, and can be accessed by schools, employers, and maybe the fathers of prospective romantic attachments. I guess it was a scare tactic teachers used to use, and some still believe it.

When my daughter graduated High School last year she was invited to get her permanent record (or else they would be destroyed - except for the stuff mandated by law to be kept - like a copy of her transcript). So, she got the official folder - what a disappointment - it had nothing I did not already have - old report cards, standardized test results, etc. So, I too believe this “permanent record” is an empty threat.

By contrast, on my son’s last day of high school, he got his “permanent record” and there really was one! Wow, what a trip down memory lane. It had everything, including things from the school he attended in another state for kindergarten and first grade, nurse’s notes for every tooth lost in elementary school, up through his teacher’s recommendations for college. I was sort-of stunned that there really was a “permanent record”!

When we have moved due to job transfers, the previous school did send a cumulative record to the new school that includes test scores, etc. There is a discipline history section in that record as well. I would consider this a “permanent” history-but permanent only as long as you are in the K-12 system. I was filling in for the school secretary at the kids elementary school for a couple weeks one year and I had to assemble some of these files for new students. They do exist.

5th grade school records will not be part of what her future HS will send to Colleges when she applies.

I would be more concerned about addressing the behavior that cause a 5th grader a 1 day suspension.

It sounds like you got a bad one. Give up on her and try to have a replacement child, one that is better. Best of luck.
