College Admittance coming from a presitigious public high school?

I was just wondering if coming from a public high school with high rigor academics and a history of producing ivy league students will boost my chances of admission into college? Or will it at least "add a few points" on my application?

eventually it will depend how you dealt with this kind of standards at HS. but I do not think that it will boost your application.

If you come from a competitive school with rigorous academics, officers will usually allow some slack with a lower GPA or class rank than other applicants from less competitive schools, although I do not believe it will directly boost your chances. I could be wrong, though.

Your school itself won’t “boost” your chances – it’s what you’ve done with the opportunities that historically, have allowed others to attain competitive admits. If you blow it, your association w/the school is worthless. It’s about YOU and not your school.

There’s research out there that suggests it actually puts you at a bit of a disadvantage over people at the top of their class in a less competitive school.

A competitive school, however, will provide you with a solid education and lots of opportunities. Going to a competitive school is also likely to help you prepare for the rigors of college-level academics and thus do better in college in the long run.

To get into top-tier schools, you’re going to need to excel at whatever school you attend–competitive or not. You need to be able to take advantage of the opportunities your school provides and excel academically at your school–especially since plenty of your peers will be doing so.
