College Advice

Hello CC! I'm a senior and I really want to take advantage of early decision. I want to major in economics or finance but I am unsure where to apply. I'm thinking of apply to UPenn (CAS) or Cornell (CAS or dyson program) ed but I want to have a decent chance of getting accepted. I have 2000 on my sats and I'm going to take them again this November (rush sending). I took subjects this october in Ush and math 1 and 2 which i hope i did reasonably well on. I'm a member of quite a few clubs and i'm vice president or president of 3 of them, i do 2 sports every year and i'm varsity captain for one of them and i have 100+ volunteering hours, my school doesn't do unweighted gpas but i think mine is 3.9+ because my unweighted is 4.2, hopefully all of my sat prep works and i get a high 2100 on my next sats. I was wondering if i had a chance of getting into UPenn or should i apply to cornell which has a slightly lower range for sats based on college board. Do people get into Penn or Cornell ed with applications like mine? If anyone has or just wants to give their input I would greatly appreciate it!

I don’t see the advantage of ED. A 2100 isn’t the best SAT (by the way “rush” reporting isn’t necessary) for Upenn or Cornell especially if you have no hooks. Your leadership in your activities is good as is your gpa, but your chances seem low. I’m sure kids have gotten into these schools with your stats, but they probably had legacy or amazing essays. So I would hold off to apply, polish your essays, and then hope for the best during RD.

I have a few hooks that I think may help, low income and 1st gen college student, do you think those will make a significant impact?

since most colleges are need-blind, they don’t see your income, I don’t think (so I don’t think low-income necessarily helps). but first gen should

I agree with rainydays05’s evaluation of your stats. However, I think you should apply ED if you decide that one is your clear 1st choice. If you’re still on the fence about Cornell and Penn, then don’t do ED and just take your chances at RD. But if you have a clear 1st choice, regardless of acceptance potential, apply there.

@domino2017 cornell and upenn are my first choices but I wanted to know if that is too unrealistic, at an admissions standpoint upenn’s ed acceptance rate is about 15% higher than its rd, and cornell’s is about the same so I really want to apply ed

First, 4.2 weighted does not necessarily mean a 3.9+. Use [Staples High School–Info–GPA Calculator](http://www.stapleshigh.net/info/grades.html) to calculate your actual UW gpa.
Second, you didn’t mention rank, which does matter.
Third, ED is if you are set on one school which you have a good chance to get into. I would wait RD if I were you, but Cornell is more likely than Penn for you.

My rank is 5 out of 250ish students, but my school is ranked in the bottom twenty schools in my state, does that hurt my chances a lot? Unfortunately I don’t have access to all of my past grades at the moment so I can’t use the GPA calculator, I’ve gotten 1 88 once and everything else has been a 90 or higher over the last 3 years (all honors and 1 ap class, I’m taking 4 ap’s this year).

I think both Cornell and Penn are reaches, but not impossible. They take into account plenty of other things like essays, recommendations, interview, etc, so you could still get into either one. I think Cornell is more likely to accept you between the two, but maybe Penn will really like your personality or something. Apply to the place you love more and good luck!

There is a theory that if a school is a reach for you, applying early may hurt your chances since early applicants are stronger. Higher acceptance rate is also attributed to the strength of the applicants.

Does anyone know what sat score and what subject test score I have to get in order to stand a chance of getting into Upenn as a history major, and cornell as an applied economics majors (i believe it is part of the school of agriculture)? Thank you to everyone who replied.

You should get at least a 2100 to be a strong applicant to both of those schools. The applied economics is a very hard major to get into at Cornell since Dyson it is one of the best business type schools out there next to Wharton undergrad.

@drac313 would Upenn history be slightly easier to get into compared to dyson?

sounds like a rather unimpressive application, but I, as with most on CC, ain’t part of the adcom - take that in mind

i’d advise you to work hard on your essays…

I got into Penn.

lol you showed them :)

Believe in the tide!

That kid tide25 proved you guys wrong. #AlwaysBelieve!!!

UPenn needs to wash their clothes…so they chose TIDE as their detergent. #bKJlieve

So just curious. Your profile is very similar to my daughter’s, who’s currently a junior. Wondering what you were able to get your SAT score up to? Thanks, and congratulations on your acceptance:)
