College Algebra

College Algebra is a prerequisite to take higher math, but common sense tells me this might not look very good on a transfer application.

Today the university I'm attending cancelled the Biology part 2 class I was scheduled to take, complicating my schedule and exponentially increasing my desire to transfer, so, since I was scheduled to take College Algebra in the summer term I instead chose to do it in the fall and take Anatomy in the summer to fulfill my state university's requirement should I choose to attend.

Colleges I'm applying to for Fall 2008 in order of expected acceptance chance:

Will taking College Algebra affect my chances?

unfortunately, college alg does not transfer to many of the schools that you mentioned, especially Northwestern and Chicago.

What the hell is college algebra? Man take some real classes if you wanna transfer. For math take either Calculus, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Alegbra, Differential Equations. Those are the only classes that matter.

I was asking whether it would hurt my chance of acceptance, not if it transferred. Thanks for your reply though.

You didn’t read my post–“College Algebra is a prerequisite to take higher math.” Obviously, if I could take higher math I would have.

I don’t think it will affect ur chances…you do need to take that course first before taking any upper level of math…but did you get a poor score on your math placement??? my first math class when i was in college was precalc

To make a long story short, my background in math sucks. Given my CR scores and how analytical I am, I think my math score could actually be higher than CR if my background wasn’t awful, but I can’t do much about that now.

Oh, sorry. Yeah, it wont affect your chances at all…just take a higher math course later like calculus or stats.

Collegehopeful, why do you have to be so rude? It seems he hasn’t scored very high on the math placement test. Nothing to be a **** over. And I wouldn’t say those are the ONLY maths that matter towards transfer, and surely not the only factors.

Sorry If I gave the wrong expression. But those are the real math classes that will help his transfer. While college algbera won’t hurt his chance they won’t help them either.

if you want to take a math that fulfills a requirement at most schools and transfers, just take statistics

Thanks everyone.

Basically, College Alg. does transfer to my state college (UT) and I feel like, given my background in math, taking it would be a good idea because if I went to a higher-level uni. (UVa or higher) I might not do so well in their pre-cal course without it.

My main worries were if it would hurt my transfer chances, I never expected it to help them. Again, thanks!

Dude you can probably handle calculus. Don’t let your Sat math make you think otherwise. plus caluclus is quite useful in many fields. you’ll probably end up tzking it anywaayz.

Try Pre-Calculus.
