College and FAFSA giving me different stories

Hey, I could really use some help.
I filed my taxes, and then my FAFSA months ago for this academic year.
I did the IRS tax transcript transfer for my parents income, and that worked fine.
I was told by my college that I had everything in.

Then I called last week to see when I would get my financial aid package.
The college told me that I did not send my IRS tax transcripts, and that I needed to.
Okay, so I logged onto the FAFSA to try to do that.
There is, however, no option to send my tax transcript to them.
So, I called the FAFSA help line. The woman on the line told me that my parents "probably don't make enough money for the FAFSA" to have it ask me to send in my tax transcript.
So, I called the college and told them what the FAFSA told me. They said that the FAFSA woman was incorrect, and that I do need to do this.
The college told me that I said I did not file taxes on the FAFSA.
I cannot, for the life of me, find the option or question in the FAFSA about my taxes(the student's).

Help! I don't know what to do! School starts soon, and I live far below the poverty line.
I won't be in school this semester if I don't figure this out soon.

I can even make a video with a screencapture program to show you all what the FAFSA shows me, if you want.
I've spent HOURS and HOURS trying to figure this out.

Thank you.

Wait, so you and your parents filed differently or do they claim you as a dependent? Also what did you put for your taxes (will file, will not file, etc.).

Another thing is that on occasion, schools require you to submit your taxes to them.

They claim me as a dependent. I was not asked will file, will not file etc on the FAFSA. If it did ask me that, I would put in the correct info.

I’ve given the school all of our info such as tax returns and w-2’s.

Thanks for the reply!

Do you have access to a fax machine? If so, you can get your tax transcript right away, sign it, then fax it to the school. If you can do that, let me know & I will tell you how. If not, I will walk you through the FAFSA.

I do not have access to a fax machine. :frowning:
But I’d very much appreciate being walked through on the FAFSA.

I can PM you my email address if you want. Or another way to communicate if that works better.

Thanks!

The IRS transcript is thru the IRS. You can request they fax to the college if I’m not mistaken. We got it in three days, via snail mail hough they said could take ten. It’s a very efficient system. Mif you don’t have a Dax, go find one. Post office stores, kinkos have faxes it’s it’s cheap. All a transcript is is a verification from the IRS that tax returns were indeed sent and accepted

Fafsa is not connected tot the IRS. Did your parents file a return?

See link below:

[IRS Data Retrieval - 2012-2013 FAFSA - YouTube](<a href=“IRS Data Retrieval - 2012-2013 FAFSA - YouTube”>IRS Data Retrieval - 2012-2013 FAFSA - YouTube)

The IRS will not fax to a non-secure fax (like OfficeMax or Kinko’s), and they will not fax to a fax number where you are not in attendance to receive the transaction. I used to have students call at our walk-in counter, and they have it faxed to our machine while we were both there. To do that, you call 1-800-908-9946 and hit “0” over and over until you get a real person. Tell the real person that you want the transcript faxed to you right then.

Damekian, let’s start with the basics. Let me make sure that I understand what is happening for you. Your parents’ tax information was successfully transferred via the IRS tax transfer link. Is this correct? You are unable to transfer your own tax information via the IRA tax transfer link. Is this correct?

I am going to assume both answers above are yes. Now, look at your SAR ([Home - FAFSA on the Web-Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa.gov)). Find question #32. What is the answer? If it is either “I will file but have not completed my return” or “I will not file,” that is why you cannot use the link. If you update it to “I have already completed my return,” you will be able to use the link.

If you did answer “I have already completed my return,” but you cannot access the link, watch the youtube video in the post above. See if that helps you.

Post for more help if none of the above works …
