Hello! I've been a long-time lurker here, but never really felt the need to post before. I'm a high school senior, and college applications are beginning to take over my life. My list is really, really varied- there are so many things others take into account that I am not. This is it, so far at least:

NYU
CCM
Hartt
Ithaca
Penn State
FSU
Indiana
UArts
SUNY Fredonia
SUNY New Paltz

All in all, is my list too competitve? Besides for talent, I have a 2000 on the new SAT (1290 w/o writing), a 30 ACT, and a 89.5 GPA.

Also- I'm interested in singing "The Alto's Lament" for auditions. Lately I have been concerend- this isn't technically from a show. Is that going to be a HUGE problem? My voice teacher said one of her students got into Cap21 with it, so it must not be a huge detriment.

Before questions, Yes, I DO have the Sheet Music. Don't ask me how I got it- it took years. And no, I do not own a scanner. Sorry- I've been asked 20 thousand times.

Back on track- my two questions. Are my schools too competitive/should I add some safeties, and is the Alto's Lament a no-no?

heres my thought on audition songs...doesnt matter if someone else got in with it...the question is can YOU get in with it...ive picked songs that best show off my voice...most likely...no one will sing them, as i have gone out of my way to make sure that happens...but i talked to a guy who got into, and attended cap 21...but like 5 years ago...but he got in by singing jekyl and hyde...which is a big no no apparently...so really it all depends...my advice? go on the safe side...

even though the song isnt from a show, id find one that is just to be safe...my thoughts, better safe then sorry...especially dealing with college auditions...(btw, i know it sucks trying to find all these songs, but im sure your teacher can help)

just my personal opinion - if it's written by musical theatre composers, i doubt it would be too much of a problem. just make sure your other song is DEFINITELY from a musical. just say alto's lament, by blah blah and blah blah and don't say the show, i really think you'd be fine, especially if you are really set on singing it and are passionate about using it. then yeah, i agree with chrisnoo just have a backup in case they tell you to not sing it.

I would think the biggest problem with this song is not that it's not MT - but that given that many places want a 16 or 32 bar cut, what section would you choose to do? To be effective, I think it needs to be heard in its entirety. If you're singing somewhere that allows you an entire song, that's different. THEN - instead of relying on well-meaning advice from people who are guessing at best, contact each school and ask about the advisability of singing a cabaret song instead of an MT one.

I already picked out the 32 and 16 bars, and am also auditioning with it for ARTS. The song is perfect for my voice, and considering the high C and the low E's are all in my range- why not? I don't have to fake either of them. Emily Skinner had to, so I suppose it says something about me.

Thanks for the idea about contacting them about a cabaret peice, also. I don't know why I hadn't thought of that. I'll add it to my too-do list for tomorrow, which is already extreemly long. Finish 2 essays, send in CCM application, go to Penn State info meeting in NYC, find audition monolouge, memorize monolouge....

Uy vey. Is a monolouge spoken by a character who is around my age but has defiently lost her marbles an ok thing to do? I know you are supposed to fit types...

Good Luck with the piece. I think it's a fabulous one and really shows off your acting and singing chops. My d did it years ago and always loved it. Her vocal coach called it a "trunk piece" and said never say where you got it from ,lol!

Marcy and Zina have written that it will be published later this year in Goldrich and Heisler, Vol. 2. So maybe people will stop bugging you soon.

Thespian Dreams - Your list looks good, and has a good mix. Many of them are very competitive. You are probably aware that Indiana for theatre is not an audition school this year, but may be next year for the MT option. They already have auditions for vocal performance. Also, I'm not very familiar with the SUNY school requirements, but I heard that Fredonia was good.

Alto's Lament is her favorite piece, and she plans to use for several competitions this year. She won a competition with it this summer. I had the same question about its appropriateness for college auditions and I'm still not sure what the answer is, but she has a couple years to go before worrying about it, being a HS sophomore. It does work better in it entirety, but she's also done it as 16 bars.

Hi, I'm a freshman BFA MT at FSU and I love it! There are a lot of good things about it so feel free and message me if you have questions! Last year NYU was another one of my options, but they are SO stingy on financial aid, so unless oyu have some money it will be difficult.

Someone said earlier back that it doesn't matter what somebody else got in with, because the song you sing doesn't get you in, your voice, talent, and preparation does.
With the help of my voice teacher we decided that one of my audition songs is going to be a very well known song, that was done a few years previous at my number one school. At first I was totally against this, (for the obvious reason "they'll be hearing the last guy in their head") but he assured me that I sing it very well and bring lots of character to it, and that no matter how the last guy sang it for their production, I would compliment it.
I guess I'll know if that works after the audition, but I think it is an example of how sometimes a not-so-obscure song can be a good choice for a particular person.

that was a ramble: I'm just trying to add to the votes for kids not asking people for song recommendations if they don't know them. Find a voice teacher. I know it's expensive and takes up time, but MT is a demanding career choice... I'd say getting voice lessons is the bare minimum to prep for it..

Thanks, MT, but that was completely unnecessary with this post.

I wasn't looking for song recs- I know exactly what songs im singing for which college alerady. I was just worried about one, because occasionally its not allowd because its not a showtune. I contacted every college, and all but one accepts this song. The other is stictly showtunes.

And how did I know the songs I chose, and where I learn them? My voice teacher, Karen, worked on them with me. I've been taking voice lessons for 7 straight years.

I don't mean to sound snappy, but don't preach to a person who already knows. And this post had nothing to do with song choice, or voice lessons. Only the appropriatness of the Alto's Lament, and if the colleges I'm applying to are too competetive overall.

Thanks for the advice, but no thanks. I'm good.

I know, sorry if I seemed snippy. I was just irritated that he was trying to make me a culprit of something I wasn't. I dont like when people assume without asking, its a pet peeve.

thespian,
I wasn't trying to preach to you or anyone. This is a public board open for discussion, and my post was a general post on the topic title. I was just telling a story quite unrelated to yours. Sorry If i seemd to be preaching, but in all honesty, I was not posting in response to any of your posts. Not everyone reading knows what they're doing yet: they are who I'm writing for.
