Do most colleges take your best score from each section, when the test is taken more than once?

selective schools look at the composite score.. meaning they dont take the best scores from each section.

What? I thought it was the other way around...

TestHater is wrong.

What do you mean by a "selective schoo?" We talking like Harvard selective or like Penn State selective?

agree with testhater.

Apparently most schools will mix and match, but check with each individual school before assuming.

CC is starting to make me nervous- im reading posts like "2290 SAT will give you a low-decent chance at ivy leagues"? if thats true then I'd better start applying to state schools with my 2110.

ppl that say those kinds of things say them on purpose to (unnecessarily) worry others and mislead them...

for ivies, SAT scores certainly won't get you in, but if they are low they certainly can keep you out

I agree 100%. I know a 2290 that got into Princeton. A 2290 WILL NOT KEEP YOU OUT. It just won't get you in. A lot of people place too much emphasis on SAT scores for the very selective schools. If you're unhooked, check for yourself to see if your SAT falls within the top 50-75% range, that's a much better indicator.

So an unhooked applicant would have a reasonable chance if his/her SAT scores fall into the top 50-75% or beyond?

Don't let anyone kid you---SAT scores are crucial for an unhooked applicant. IMO your best chances of admission are at schools where your scores are in their 75% plus range. Btw some selective schools like Notre Dame take your best score for each section, while some like UCLA use the composite only.

err, what does unhooked mean?

If you are "hooked", then you have a leg up on everyone else applying to college. For example if your a minority or have a special talent, like solving a rubix cube in about 20 seconds. So "unhooked" simply means that you dont have a free ride into college.

Oh so, EverTest, do you mean a special talent like doing flags? i dunno just a random talent i thought of...

what's IMO?

in my opinion = IMO

lol, i think it's obvious 2290 won't kick you out of top colleges? umm..2290 is a great score, i don't see how anyone can dispute that.
for top colleges, usually 2200+ is preferable. also, for now, it's better to have higher M &V scores than writing ones...

^I thought so too.

Agreed...it is based on composite scores at the higher-rated schools.
