College App Recommendation Question

Both my teachers that I want a recommendation letter from are leaving next year. (Math and History) What should I do?

Is it possible that I could approach them in two years (I'm a sophomore right now) when they are at another school and ask them to write a recommendation? In other words, do the recommendations have to come from teachers that are currently teaching?

Another one of my teachers is retiring, am I allowed to ask her in two years and ask her to write me a recommendation?

ye this also happened to me, it kinda sucks. I was on pretty friendly terms with my guidance counselor, but she recently retired. Now theres a new counselor who barely knows who anyone is...let alone able to write a good rec...

It may not have been the BEST idea to ask for reqs from sophomore year teachers. Junior/Senior year are best. If you think that these 2 teachers have an incredible relationship with you, then ask NOW. Maybe they can write letters for you now/agree to write them in the future.

Otherwise start cultivating relationships with other teachers.

can't you get recs from them even if they leave the school? after all, they taught you and know you well - that's gotta count for more than "average" recs from new teachers

If they're amenable to it and it'll work out, you can certainly get recommendations from them even when they're at another school.

However, ses is right: it's generally a better idea to ask a junior-year teacher for a recommendation. I had a few teachers last year that probably would have written some great ones, too, but the general consensus is that teachers from your junior year are best to ask. For one thing, many colleges say in their application guidelines that that's what they prefer. And it makes sense; we chance a LOT in high school, and a teacher from eleventh grade is going to know more about what kind of student you're developing into than a teacher from sophomore year.

However, if you really feel like no one can offer you a recommendation like these teachers, that's fine. Just think about why. Do you really have a significant rapport with them, beyond being a student they particularly like? Otherwise, I'd hold out for next year if I were you.
