I don’t know when I should start these procedures if I’m applying Early Decision (deadline Nov 1):

When do I ask teachers/counselors for recommendations, and when should they mail the completed forms?

When should I send my college application? Can I send mine after my teachers send their recommendation forms?

I’m asking for the best time (not the deadline) to do these things.

Thank You

1) immediately if at all possible. to give them ample time to wroite a good one for you. as for when they shld send it, anytime before nov 1 is fine.
2) you can send before or after, but normally i'd send before.

Your first step, if you are sure of the ED, is to talk to your GC about that decision. Do this ASAP. There will be extra paperwork for the ED, so you need to get all of that to guidance as soon as you are sure of your decision. Include a stamped postcard, addressed to you, that the admissions staff can send you when they receive that part of your packet.

Start talking to your teachers, now, before they are swamped by rec requests. If they will be sending rec's directly to the school, give them stamped, addressed envelopes to do so (include a coded return card in each).

If you will be applying on line, you can be working on that as the other paperwork is being processed. The college will not be able to evaluate the application until all the pieces parts are in. In some cases, my son's submitted form arrived after the other paperwork. Better to give yourself an extra day or two to review everything than to rush it!

If you have to submit a financial aid estimate, you need to add your parents to the list of people you have to manage. If they are like me, its going to take them time to get all their stuff together, and file an estimated CSS Profile (there is a one week delay between filing this and the school getting it). If your financial situation is complicated (e.g., they own their on business), they may need to talk to their accountant first. By the way, the on-line support on the CSS Profile form is very good and quite prompt. You can't let you folks wait till the last minute, though!
