I've received waived app fee's and essays for many of my top schools (siena college, york college, university of new haven, suny oneonta, coastal carolina etc.) I am currently working on the personal statements for them but once i finish should i have people look over it? My guidance counselor said that i should bring it to him and make sure my application is completely done. I am very self-conscious about my writing so i am a bit nervous for him to read it. Can someone tell me what i really need to do once my application is complete?

yes, it would be a good idea. My parents looked over my apps to make sure there weren’t errors, typos, etc. I had a former english teacher read my essays in addition to my parents. You want to know how your application and writing comes across to someone else. Don’t be nervous, he’s there to help you. He’ll give you constructive criticism on what should change to maximize your application.

You should have some adult with a good sense of the college admissions process review them. Agree he just wants to help. You would rather have him notice issues you could correct than not have it reviewed, and have the colleges see them instead!

It is great that your GC is offering that. I am the one going through my D’s applications and essays. Even I am not a native English speaker, I offered many useful suggestions to her. Sometimes, it takes a second (or third) person to point out some problem. Something you may assume people would understand what you are saying, but it may not be the case.
